Trail Conditions: Lonesome Lake Trail was hard-packed snow all the way to the hut. Around the lake, the snow was a little softer with several open water crossings (summer "bog bridges" are available to help in the crossings). Once we left the lake, the snow was granular and well-packed for the most part. We didn't have any trouble with postholing, but we stayed on the well-worn path. Kinsman Ridge trail between LL Trail and Hi-Cannon was icy, but it was just a few sections within that span.
Special Equipment Required: some form of traction was essential. We used Stabilicers and then switched over to crampons. Others we saw were in snowshoes, which were fine down below, but seemed to give them more trouble once they got onto the icy sections. Poles were nice for the water crossings.
Comments: Beautiful day for this hike. More than 2 dozen people on the trails. The snow is still deep. The rain didn't ruin it. Some old postholes from softer times were very deep (2-3 feet) - even snowshoe-sized ones. That must hurt.
