Trails: Camp Dodge shortcut, Imp Trail, North Carter Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, 19 Mile Brook Trail

With the long weekend and forecast for gusty winds up high, we opted for a hike in the more somewhat sheltered Carter Range. This is one of our less frequently hiked areas, and it ended up being an excellent hike for today.

There were several sections headed up to the ridge and down on 19MB Trail with water running down the trail, both from drainage ditches clogged with leaves and from hurricane erosion. Besides plenty of mud on parts of Carter-Moriah north of Zeta Pass, the rest of the trails were in good shape. The erosion down low on 19 Mile Brook Trail is impressive.

Hannah had a good day - plenty of water and mud all day, and she didn't get too warm with all the shade. Met a number of other trail doggies enjoying the day.

Great day overall - good views from up high, warm temps and the wind wasn't blowing as strongly as was forecasted. Saw about half a dozen people before Mt. Hight, then good sized crowds on the summit of Hight, Carter Dome, and around Carter Notch Hut. Briefly chatted with a members of a large AMC group, and Kevin, Judy and their pooch Emma on Carter Dome, nice to have met you all. Had the outlook halfway down Carter Dome to myself for a long time, and hung out by the lake for a leisurely break enjoying the fall colors.

Happy fall!
