****THIS TRAIL IS RECENTLY AFFECTED BY HEAVY MACHINERY ON TRAIL****
8/27/2013
Parking area had a number of pickup trucks and some parked heavy equipment. Once on the grassy road, for the ATV trail to follow it you need to cross a bridge on the left, the heavy machinery being used on the trail has a new heavier log bridge next to it. The trail no longer looks like a double wide ATV trail in the woods.
According to a Penobscot representative, Mitchell, work is being done on the wet area near Snow Pond, once the work is done they will backfill the 'damage' done by the heavy equpment.
At the start of the hike that morning, the small Snow Mtn trail sign (before the pond area) was on a leaning birch tree. By the time we finished, the birch had fallen to the ground. Mitchell said this would be fixed as well, but if you are hiking the area before their restoration work is done, the sign might be missing.
After the rains of the past couple weeks, i would expect the ATV portion of the trail is extremely muddy.
Above the approach road, and next forest road, the trail to the top has been flagged with some yellow and/or orange surveyors tape, not sure why, tape is fairly high so not sure if someone marked it for snow travel.
Fire tower ladder still intact.
We thanked Mitchell and the Penobscot nation for keeping the trail open for NEHH hikers et. al.
