East Osceola & Main Peak via Greeley Ponds/Kanc

Date of Hike: 5-15-10

Trail Conditions: Bare and muddy from trailhead to junction with Greeley Ponds Trail. Small patches of snow & ice appeared early on in the climb from the junction. Hard packed areas of snow & ice a foot or so deep along the steep sections heading to the ridge. Once on the ridge, long stretches again of hard packed snow & ice to East Peak and to Main Peak. The Chimney was actually one of the few areas free of ice & snow. Encountered just a minor blowdown or two on the trip.

Special Equipment Required: Barebooted 99% of the hike. On the return trip we used microspikes to negotiate several hundred yards of especially slick, hard packed snow right before the start of the descent off the ridge.

Comments: Typical spring hike in that the conditions down below offered no indication of what we’d face higher up.

Cloud cover shut down the views today. We were lucky to avoid any downpours. Saw about 10 people up on the ridge today. Saw a dozen or more folks down below heading to the ponds. Everything looks so green!

Major BBQ this afternoon @ Chez Schor’s in Hooksett!
