Mount Baldy is in the news again.

Bad weather was the forecast. Yet an experienced three-season hiker walked solo into the storm. She did not return.

How does this happen?

IMO, most 22 year olds are not that experienced.

My wife and I hiked Mt. Baldy in late December 2023, and we encountered zero snow or ice, even though we were prepared for it. We also went the same route as her and did not think the mountain was dangerous. I think that is part of the problem. It is a steep hike the whole way, but when conditions are good, people will be fine. When there is snow and ice, it is a completely different mountain. Add bad weather into the mix, it can lead people into a bad situation just like any other mountain.

I feel really bad for her family...

Inexperienced hikers, don't know about the dangers of mountain climbing, by the time they find out, it's too late. Same old story.

Of course, with no data to support it, I'd say 99% of inexperienced hikers complete their activity with no issues and nobody ever talks about it....
