I went on an overnight hike this weekend lead by an AMC leader. We went up the Ethan Pond trail to Mt. Willey, then back down to the Ethan Pond campsite for the night. I bare booted the entire hiked except when going down Mt. Willey, where I put on crampons. Traction is recommended, especially on the ladders. We camped just before the stream below the Ethan Pond shelter. Crossing the frozen stream/lake didn't look safe. There's still exposed running water which is helpful for camping.
Hopefully this will be the first of many trips this winter!
Here are some photos of the trip.
