We had two cars so we could make a loop. Left a car at the N Twin TH and started at Gale River TH.

Gale River Trail to Garfield Ridge - relocated section of trail avoids both crossings but is a bit of a muddy slog. The footing is OK just mud, mud, mud. There is a sign explaining the relocation at the top of the relocated trail section. The rest of the trail - great footing and no blow downs. Garfield Ridge to Galehead Hut - great conditions - dry and free of blowdowns. Frost to Galehead: some mud otherwise fine. Twinway to South Twin - mostly dry and as steep as ever. North Twin Spur: brushed out and mostly dry. North Twin Trail - slow going on the descent due to lots of loose rock and small stones. Muddy before the third crossing. Third crossing rock hop-able, although I managed to get water in one boot. Took the herd path to avoid the second and first crossing. By then we were using head lamps and the herd path is easy to follow even in the dark. Muddy in spots.

All in all a great day - lingered a little too long on the summits - but no problem doing the last 1.5 miles by headlamp.

Did this loop in the opposite direction 10 years ago. Except for the steep descent to Galehead on the Twinway - recommend going N Twin to South to Galehead.

Equipment: poles were helpful, headlamps for this time of year.
