Got off to a later than expected start since I picked up Farmer and Jason Ferris at Stony Brook TH since they decided not to go back over Carters and Wildcats to their car at Wildcat ski area.

After refueling and re-packing we were off on garfield trail a bit after 11am. We parked at Trudeau Rd. without realizing the real winter parking lot was open. Some people seemed to have gone up garfield and skied down so trail was broken out to the summit. Blistering cold and windy so we continued toward Lafayette and it was a lot of icy branches hanging low in the upper region but it got better the further down we went. We could follow some old tracks most of the time. When we got to the pond we got lost for a little bit since everything was heavily drifted in. After getting back on the trail we went up the little hill after the pond but the cold had taken a toll on Jason and Ryan (who overnighted at Imp Shelter the previous night) and we decided to turn around and go uphill to get warmed up. We made our way back up to Garfield and skipped the summit this time. Took a break at the intersection 0.2 miles below summit.

Then we moved pretty fast down to route 3 and were down around 4:45pm.

Trail is hardpacked all the way. We feel confident we can go from Garfield to Lafayette during the record attempt......that will be a long day: Garfield to Franconia Ridge and then bushwack down from the col between Flume and Liberty to Lincoln Brook trail and up to Owl's Head and back to Lincoln Woods.

We need the force to be with us:
