What a GREAT report! That is a superb itinerary, I would love to get into the GG for some camping.

thanx, bjc and jake for the Great comments!
you know what they say, "if you haven't day hiked the gg/sphinx loop with a quick backpack trip to stairs afterwards, you haven't really hiked in NH" o.k., nobody says that, but it's an instant classic in my book..
Jake, I too would like to do a gg camp thing and slackpack different trails.. the area has a reputation of a bear hot spot (tho, not as bad as the pemi or tripoli rd areas.) the 1st 3 sites along the trail have bear boxes, the 3rd of which being clam rock.. there's the site next to 6 husbands and buttress site, I don't think there is a box there? there's 2 more sites on the gg trail shortly after where you go straight vs. right to 6 husbands.. these sites seem to be pretty primo sites, no bear boxes tho.. none of the sites have privys to my knowledge.. Any future campers reading this, please go as far as possible into woods away from the river to do your business, the camp sites are close to the water source, (peabody river).. My only issue with camping @ stairs mt, prior campers going #2 pretty much in one of the sites, t.p. + flies were very visible, pretty darn gross!!

We did not see a bear box at the Buttress campsite.

I would definitely treat my water from the Peabody given all the campsites right on it.
