Hurricane from the east

Can anybody give me any beta on Hurricane from the east? My guidebook is the 11th edition and indicates that you can drive quite a ways in (to within 0.5 mi of the old observer's cabin), thus reducing the hike to 1.5 miles and 1500' gain. Is it still possible to drive this far in or has the road been further closed? Is there still a lean-to just past the cabin and, if so, is it popular? And is it any good or is it trashed (relatively speaking)?

Note that the signs for the parking space were very confusing the last time I was there, use your judgement as to where it is. This trail is about the same length as the others now.
