Location
Lake Katrine, NY, just inside the Catskill Blue L
Date Hiked: 9/24/08

Conditions: Trails mostly dry. The northern section of the snowmobile loop and the "Pine Plains" area of the Long Path have some mud wallows. The summit trails have some eroded sections, but no other obstacles. No bugs were encountered.

Special Required Equipment: Long pants for the nettles, although they are in a withering decline. Camera for the view at Hurricane Ledge and the early fall foliage.

Comments: Round trip about 7.7 miles, 2800' total elevation gain, 5 hours. Started from the Steenberg Road trailhead at the top of Platte Clove. From the Long Path height of land I bushwhacked over to the snowmobile trail and the lower, June 1987, plane wreck (in two areas on the trail just south of a mud wallow). Hiked over to the south side, old Police Camp trail (there is a large cairn at the junction with the snowmobile trail. The trail is marked with some backward blue DEC markers and a variety of blue paint blazes. Parts of the second plane wreckage have been carried to the summit. The wreck proper is further east on herd paths - seems like some of the plane wreck is disappearing, or maybe just disintegrating. Descended the north side, old Twilight Park trail which has a few blue paint blazes and some cairns. The junction with the snowmobile is marked with a cairn and is at a small stream crossing. The next junction of two snowmobile trails is well marked, the second junction at the Long Path is not marked, but there is at a sign that announces that it is 2.0 miles to Wildcat Falls, 3.9 to Poet's Ledge, and 5.5 to Palenville. The return to Steenberg Road (3.5 miles, not signed) is in the opposite direction (right turn). The worst mud wallows are encountered in this section of the Long Path.
