Anyone up for meeting July 30 - Aug. 3 at the Lakes of the Clouds hut for some hiking? I will be taking some vacation that week and plan on doing quite a bit of hiking ;)

Also planning a camping trip 4th of July weekend in Woodland Valley, NY and doing some hiking on Wittenberg, Slide and Cornell. Drop me a line if you are interested...

I expect to be doing Jefferson on Sunday, July 31. If you happen to head over that way, look for the geezer in the VFTT shirt. Dave Metsky should be there too.

Enjoy your stay at "Lakes of the Crowds".

Well, I think any of the huts will feel a bit "crowded" as they near capacity occupation. Lakes maybe moreso because it has the most bunk space of any hut while the common areas like the library are not really proportionately larger. Lakes also sees a larger volume of day hikers stopping in than do other huts. Clearly, different people have very different tolerances for feeling "crowded" in the mountains.

The AMC suggests Lonesome Lake as a good first hut trip for a young child. It is a good combination of a modest walk in and a little more elbow room due to the good sized common area and detached bunk rooms. The pond and other water spots are also less fragile and more accessible to families with children than say the 2 ponds at "Lakes". I might suggest Mizpah Spring as well. If you'd like to bring/prepare your own food, then Carter Notch would be a good choice too.

It's a good thing you are doing. I hope this is helpful . . .

Lonesome, Zealand, Carter , Mizpah and even Greenleaf are easier to get to. These routes are in the forest and therefore have much less exposure to the elements. Lonesome has the reputation of being the most family friendly.

I've stayed at Lakes several times and it is usually packed. I believe that the official capacity is 90, but I was there once in bad weather, and they managed to squeeze in about 102 people. That's crowded - particularly on a bad weather day.

Thanks to all for the feedback...I might try to switch to the Lonesome Lake hut instead but I am not sure if there will be space available at this point...we'll see. I am just praying for really good weather... :)

Hut availability

As of right now Lonesome Lake is only sold out on 7/30. Lakes is sold out. Looks like the best bets would be Carter Notch, Lonesome Lake or Mizpah. Everything is pretty much sold out for the Saturday night, 7/30. You can check real-time availabilty on the AMC website.
This is not an endorsement...just information!

Hey all, I got in at Lonesome for those dates!!! Yeah I am so stoked and now I feel more confident about this trip...We are staying at Lonesome and Greenleaf.

Thanks to everyone for their input and please let me know if you would be interested in meeting up for a hike!
