Madison from Apalachia via Valley Way, Madison Hut, Osgood.

BikeHikeSkiFish (Tim), Enapai (Dave)

Date of Hike: 14-Feb-2008

Trail Conditions: The consolidated trail was covered with 4-6" new snow, then a half inch of sleet / rain, and then another 1-2" new snow. The last half-mile to the hut had deeper drifts, 18-24". Two guys went to the hut and back ahead of us, partly bare-booting, partly snowshoeing.

The trail is bare-bootable to the hut. Snowshoes nice for that last half mile where the powder is deeper / windblown.

Hut to Madison has mostly crusty snow which mostly held our weight. Some 2-3' deep drifts and occasional posthole.

Special Equipment Required: Wore shoes to the hut, crampons to the summit, and left them on all the way to Appalachia.

Comments: Undercast on the West/North side, nice views of Carter-Moriah Range, all high summits were in the clear above the clouds. Two groups of four went up for the tent platform mid-afternoon. All bare-booting.

Round trip time: 6:30
