Last month when we finished the Belknap 12, we met a couple who were parked at a closer trailhead than we were, by about 3 mountains and 7 miles, they offered to drive us back to our vehicle. Over the last month we have become good friends and were talking about trying to find Eagles Nest. We both had already found Pumpelly Cave separately, so we decided to combine our research and try our luck.
The first time we had climbed Mount Monadnock (#24 on the fire tower list for us), we didn’t do it for the fire tower remains, so the plan was to hike to the summit again, then try to find the Nest. We parked off Old Troy road at the Dublin Trail parking lot. It’s a decent size lot, but it fills up fast. We got there around 9:00AM and there were only a few spots left.
The trail starts off with hardly any elevation for the first 0.8 miles, then the UP starts. There are some spots where it gets kind of steep, but they don’t last too long. At one spot, I turned around and realized we were getting views. They were hazy, but they were still views. As we continued along we eventually came to Jim’s Junction, which is where the Marlboro Trail merges with the Dublin Trail. It is also here we started getting views of the summit. Being above the tree line on Monadnock seems different from other mountains we have been on, must be the rocks. We continue on and as we neared the summit, the crowds became apparent. The winds were also whipping around. It was tough getting some of the video as we were being pushed by the wind.
Once on the summit we worked our way over to the ‘Cellar’ as it has been nicknamed. It was so named because that’s where hikers hide out to get out of the winds and it was crowded on this day. The ‘Cellar’ is a rectangular cut made in the summit that also housed the fire tower, though it was a ground level tower. Once the tower was closed the state used it as a refreshment stand.
We took in the really hazy views and then scooted down the side a bit to get out of the winds and have a snack. After we finished we started out looking for a place to start a bushwhack for Eagles Nest. We won’t say how long it took us, where we started or how many different places we may or may not have tried on this adventure. A secret is a secret and trying to find one is an adventure in itself. All we’ll say is that the bushwhack was a lot easier than the one we did to find Pumpelly Cave.
All in all it was a great day to be on Mount Monadnock and we enjoyed the company of our new friends. We have said for a long time, that Hikers are the friendliest people we have ever met and we have been involved in a lot of other activities.
We did post a video of the hike for anyone who might be interested in seeing it...
