Otter River, Mass Avatar: Leisurely winter hike o
Date: 12-22-12

Trail Conditions: Snow and ice begin immediately in shaded areas but not a real issue until after Falcon Spring. Cascade Link and Red Spot had fair amount of running water. Many rocks and water bars had black ice and expect more today. 1-2" of frozen granular over the ice from Cascade Link-Spot Jct to summit which added to poor traction. Pumpelly frozen granular and ice. Very windy, 35mph gusts and cold made it very winter like.

Equipment: Certainly a microspike or hillsound day. Most of us carried older microspikes, not expecting what we encountered and most paid the price with some scary falls and slides. Luckily no one hurt. I switched from junk microspikes to fairly new ones for the descent down White Dot which was better but my Hillsounds would have been even better. Certainly and layering type day.

Comments: White Dot down to Paradise Valley was very tricky. Several in the group went down there. Hillsound would be much better through that section. Expect lots more ice Sunday and beyond since lots of running water in spots and temps last evening were in the teens out this way. Certainly was looking and feeling like winter yesterday. A good snowfall would be nice, Santa!!!!
