Date: 12/21/13 First day of winter? Yeah right.
Conditions: Conditions were terrible. Lower trails to Falcon Spring was spring like, wet, minor sinking, slick. Outer trails had seen very little traffic since the two storms a week ago. Lots of running water beneath mostly unpacked snow. Each step was like stepping into a foot plus of slush. Spellman, everything was wet, water running under snowpack and ice from previous weeks. Every once in a while you would step in a hole and be in water up to your knees. Ridge was combination of bare rock, snow and snow covered pools. Just not a very nice day to be hiking. Have never even seen spring conditions this bad. Thank god it was warm because we sure got wet. Conditions are likely to remain like this for Sunday and maybe even Monday with incoming rain and warm temps.
Equipment: We tried Hillsounds and snowshoes. Still rather bony for shoes in most areas and very little traction provided by Hillsounds. Short sleeve kinda day. Pole were very helpful today to stay upright, which none of us did. Best water proof boots you got, chest waders may even be worth a shot (only kidding of course)
Comments: Too bad to see 20" of good snow turn to crap. Thought maybe this was the year of an old fashion winter, but doesn't look that way right now. Thanks to the crew for making the most of a bad day.
