The day started out promising with sunny skies in the Valley. As soon as we hit the trailhead, clouds appeared and never quite went away. Ascended from the Mt Osceola Trail on Tripoli Rd. The trail was very wet and slippery but manageable. We were a group of 8 and everyone moved along at a decent pace. We were surprised to get beautiful views over to Waterville's ski slopes at several tree openings as we got to around 3300 ft. Feeling fairly fresh after summitting in 2 hrs we continued over to East Peak where I enjoyed experiencing my companions exclamations over the steepness of "The Chimney". We unloaded our packs in the col, and enjoyed a weightless scramble to the viewless summit of East Peak. We only stayed 10 minutes as the bugs were fierce and we didn't want to leave our packs unguarded too long.
We had good temps for hiking all the way, only having to put on jackets at the first summit as we ate lunch and watched the clouds move and open up views every few seconds. When the view did open up, we were rewarded with a panorama of the northern 48 ers as well as spectacular views of the Sandwich Wilderness.
A wonderful 8.4 mile day!
