Hey,

Unfortunately I didn't have a camera. Out on my wood pile on the trap that covers it, I found an interesting nest. Actually four or five of them. They were maybe 1.5in long, tightly woven thread, cashew shaped. Any ideas? Sorry no pictures... THX!

Hummingbird nests can be that small, and use spiderweb as a primary material, but they tend to be more-or-less round when seen from above, with an obvious cup shape overall. The outside is usually camouflaged with bits of lichen and moss. Hummingbirds also like to nest in trees - I've not heard of a hummingbird nest on a a woodpile.

I wonder if you're looking at cocoons or egg cases from an insect.

 When you say "thread" could it be hair ? What makes you think they are nests ? Is there an opening or eggs ? Are they attached and hanging or just placed about ? They sound more like owl pellets from the description.
