Trails: Lincoln Woods Trail, Black Pond Trail, bushwhack, Lincoln Brook Trail, Owl's Head Path, Lincoln Brook Trail, bushwhack, Franconia Falls Trail, Lincoln Woods Trail.

Trail Conditions: Some parts of the trails were somewhat muddy; but not too bad, except for the Black Pond herdpath/marked bushwhack, which was very muddy. We soon left that and struck out on our own. Brook crossings were easy. Some blowdowns on Lincoln Brook Trail and lots along the ridge of Owl's Head. Bugs were out in force, mosquitoes worse than black flies, with a few deer flies just to keep things interesting.

Equipment: Poles very helpful for brook crossings and for the Slide. GPS and/or compass for Black Pond bushwhack. Low gaiters good to have, especially for the bushwhacks.

Bug repellents: 100% DEET for arms, legs, and clothing; high-potency herbal repellent for face and neck; bandanas and hat; garlicky supper the night before the hike.

Comments: We took the Black Pond bushwhack on the way in and the Franconia Falls bushwhack on the way out. Though Black Pond seems to be more popular, I would highly recommend the Franconia Falls bushwhack. No compass or GPS needed, just follow the west side of the Brook. There is a herd path for much of the way. And you can have your choice of private swimming holes to cool off in.
