I know that it's not snowing much in Boston right now, so be aware:

Right now (12/31 8 AM) there are 8 inches of new snow on the ground in Keene, it is still snowing steadily and my street hasn't been plowed. So don't let dry roads in Boston mislead you...

Monadnock Volunteer (facing several hours of shoveling before I can get to the mountain).

Left at 5:00 this morning, didn't make it to Franconia Notch until 10:15. It usually takes 2.5 hours. The highways from north of Boston to exit 20-21 in NH were terrible.

After the shoveling...

... we set out for Monadnock. The first hill on the access road (by the Bible Center) is a no salt area. It didn't have sand on it either and when we got there I could see marks that indicated at least one car had slid down it. I was driving a rental with no snow tires, but we put it low and had a go. We made it 3/4 of the way up and then slid down backwards and ended up in a bank. A nice guy from Cambridge, MA helped push us out and we ended up snowshoeing over at the G.P.A. trailhead and going up the Birchtoff trail. Had we had snow tires and/or all-wheel drive, we would have made it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Relatively quiet in the Northcountry...

Calm between the storms? We had snow, then light snow into the afternoon -- clear with a few clouds now, maybe 4" to 5" of snow or so new on the ground. Tomorrow may be another story, but tonight it's calm and clear and the side-roads are pretty well plowed and pushed-back.

All the best to the VFTT community for a safe, healthy and very happy new year.
