My wife and I arrived at the AC gate by 6:50am. The temperature was 9 degrees and the skies were beginning to clear. About an inch or two of snow covered the lake road which had a layer of ice underneath as we got to the 3 mile mark. We donned microspkikes and used them the entire trip. The temperature seemed to get colder as we gained altitude even though the sun was bright. The trail had no more than 4 inches of new powder even on top. We did run into a LARGE ice flow at the break in the headwall near the summit. it was almost impossible to get up it and we had to skirt the edge of the ice covered trail once we got past the first stage. Crampons may have worked better here, but we eventually did get over it with just the micros. 12.4 miles in 9 hours and good conditions other than the crushing cold and ice flows.
