Took Loon Mtn.s' Brookway ski trail until it turns sharp R up to Camp 3 Lodge and North Peak chair. Then took L onto snowshoe Tr. About 30 yds down a backcountry ski trail comes in from the right. We followed that, went over the brook on a bridge, and ascended on a nice open, hard-packed ski trail, which descends the west flank of Black Mt., to the top of the ridge joining Black Mt. to the col between Scar Ridge and Loon's North Peak. We followed along the ski trail, with a nice viewpoint of Scar Ridge, along the ridge top. It then turned SW to go toward the top of North Peak. We went maybe 2/3 of the way there, then started our bushwhack.

Plenty of snow in the woods but not too powdery. Made for excellent snowshoeing conditions. Very thick "dog-hair" spruce sections are unavoidable in the col between Scar and Loon. A few more thick sections before we broke into some nice mixed hardwood/coniferous forest along the southern flank of Scar Ridge. Did a few traverses up the slope and found the canister, which is frozen shut, so no journal entry.

Upon our return, we realized that it would have been easier to start the bushwhack back where the ski trail left the Black Mt. Ridge.

Special equipment needed: Snowshoes a must.

Comments: Very hard bushwhack! I would not recommend following our snowshoe tracks exactly, since we ended up going down a 6+ ft ledge that we had to lower ourselves over and jump a little. We avoided this on the return trip. Bushwhack took us 4 hours to do ~ 3mi.

We dubbed our snowshoe track the "S & M" trail and not just because we were Shawn and Mike!
