Date of Hike: 11-13-2010
Trail Conditions: Muddy and wet in parts. Granular/packed granular snow from Unknown Pond up along Kilkenny.
Special Equipment Required: Boots and gaiters helpful with the muddy sections. Poles may be helpful, as well. No need for any assistance with the snowy sections; barebooting is fine.
Comments: Ascent was via the Unknown Pond Tr. from the York Pond Rd. trailhead. The trail seems to have enough of a mud problem during the year such that hikers are starting to widen the trail by going around the mud. Unknown Pond is totally iced over with a couple inches. Views from The Horn are some of the best in the Whites. No wind today. The day was bluebird clear. Seems like one could see forever. Saw some signs of moose, at least 5 days old or so.
