    Car camping tent

I second the recommendation of the REI Kingdome 6 with the gear garage. My experience has been quite similar... tow adults, queen airmattress, two kids (one in a pack-n-play). Plenty of room for all. It's weathered several very heavy rainfalls without a leak. The garage is a magnificent...

Relocating to NH Seacoast with Family?

I apologize if this is off-topic for this forum, but I am hoping my fellow outdoors lovers, particularly those living in the NH seacoast region can help... My wife and I are thinking about making a life change. I may have a job opportunity in the Portsmouth-Durham area of NH. We have a little...

Can you identify these picture locations?

I'm in agreement with all of the previous answers. To get more specific, I think that may be rt. 16 @ Dana Place Inn.

    New fangled footware, really wierd

These were popularized by the book, "Born to Run," which is an excellent read. I have a pair and even took them to Peru with me as camp shoes for my Inca Trail trek. I like them, but they quickly began to stink like you wouldn't believe.

    missing hiker - body found

So, not to dredge up an unpleasant thread, but I just came across this one and got sucked into the very sad tale. It occurred to me however, that if you saw this person in September with the yellow rain jacket it would be before Hilton apparently got the yellow jacket he was seen wearing in the...

    ghost stories?

I didn't suggest it was supernatural... just that I (and my dog) also experienced eerie noises by Norcross Pond that sent a shiver down my spine. Like I said, I think the noises were from some snoring ducks, not the ghost of Nancy Barton or any other ghost for that matter.

    ghost stories?

Oh yes, but I'd bet on waterfowl before tree limbs... this was much more a cacophony of wails and murmurs than a lone screech or sound.

    ghost stories?

Wow, I was camped with my dog at Norcross Pond, just by the herd path to Mt. Nancy. It was early in the season, mid-late May, there were still a few patches of snow on the ground. It was mid-week and I hadn't seen another person the entire time. My dog was very alert when we turned in for the...

    The Long Trail-MRG to Sugarbush

Pick up Dave Goodman's VT & NY BC ski book. He's got a write up in there.

X-Mas Wishlist - What Books to Add?

Great suggestions! Thanks for the National Geo list... that should keep me busy for a while. I've read "The Long Walk" I'll third, fourth it, or whatever we are up to. Great read. I've only read "Touching the Void" by Simpson. I'll have to read more of his stuff. My Amazon.com wish...

X-Mas Wishlist - What Books to Add?

Anyone read a good book lately? I'm looking to stock up on good outdoor adventure books, travelouges, etc. to occupy my Winter evenings by the fire. I'm reading "Shattered Air" by Bob Madgic right now. It's pretty good and timely in light of the Half Dome thread. I read "The Last Season"...

Woman Dies from fall on Half Dome

I say skip Half Dome and head to Cloud's Rest instead. You don't get the Half Dome experience, cables, et al., but you get the views and far fewer people. The crowds can be maddening, slow, dangerous, and just plain not fun IMO.

Fewer Americans are visiting national parks. Administrators ask why

Nobody has mentioned that over the same period skier and snowboarder visits are way up after years of declines. Snowshoeing is also booming (according to one person I spoke with the Tubbs/Atlas line is the most profitable of all of K2 Sports areas). There are two things at work with...

    Yosemite

Cloud's Rest will give you some Half Dome like views. There is a short section at the very top that might give some in the family a fright, but it really isn't too bad. I'll second the hike along the Lyell Fork in Lyell Canyon. It's a great place to linger, swim, and sunbathe... Where are...
