    Who's done the Hamlin/Katahdin loop?

Baxter Hamlin loop This thread has drifted a bit but here's my $.02: I did the loop a few years ago, in my 50's, up Helon Taylor, across KE and over to Hamlin then down Hamlin Ridge, an awesome loop, yep the first half is a bit strenuous but not a particularly long day, I think 8 or 9 hours...

    AT - Mt Wash

Google AT route The Google AT feature is great but I've noticed innacuracies including Franconia Notch where it has the AT going over Cannanballs and across I93 at the campground and up Bridle instead of to the south, and it seems to be pretty messed up between 302 and Jackson as well, and at...

Anyone regret buying a NON gore-texed boot?

Winter boots FWIW for the past 10+ years my winter boots have been the Lowa Banff leather, no goretex. Infrequently I use my old Sherpa neoprene covers on them, and at Baxter and the like I carry insulated overboot gaitors but have never used them. My feet are narrow and my Lowa's are narrow...

    Lincoln Gap/LT winter...

Lincoln Gap Agree with all previous posters. If you want to go up the LT instead of Jerusalam, from either the east or west, just drive as far as you can and from either, it's anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes walk up the Lincoln Gap road to the LT. From the east it's steeper, but from either...

Irene -- Please use this thread for NH/VT/ME road closures

Vernont destruction I assume anyone on this site is pretty aware of the situation in Vermont. Amazingly, some of the trailhead access roads are passible, but many are not and the bigger problem, especially for those coming from afar, is getting to those. 511vt.com shows most of the state road...

Crowd marvels as arch is lifted onto Lake Champlain Bridge

Crown Point Bridge Kind of like watching grass grow, but if you want to see the bridge being assembled, go to https://www.nysdot.gov/lakechamplainbridge/bridgecam The webcam shows images every 15 minutes or so for the past few months, and late last week, shows the arch being hoisted into place...

    Earthquake in Virginia 8-23

Tremor I definitely experienced this in Williston, VT, for 30 seconds or so, lampshades rocking and rolling, a rather unusual event, but not the first, in Vermont. I believe it was evident as far north as Montreal, thanks to the good bedrock of the Appalachian chain.

    Presi Traverse

Presi Traverse Option Consider stashing a mountain bike at the Highland Center for the ride back to Appalachia "the day after". It's a great ride over Jefferson Notch Rd. But, only if you've got a MT bike with some suspension. Other than that, I agree with previous posters. Enjoy! John

    Mansfield Saturday and Mud Season

Mansfield conditions I don't know it this is still useful to you, but I was on Mansfield last Sunday from the east and there was plenty of snow even down low so I think you'd be fine with regard to the "mud season" rules. Enjoy! John

    Costa Rica

Costa Rica hiking The Arenal area is beautiful in April, though it's a chancy thing to see the volcano activity because of the frequent cloud cover. One nice hike, from the area of the Arenal Observatory or just beyond it on the observatory road, is to the smaller and inactive sister peak just...

    Pulk stabilization.

Pulk help I have a Paris Expedition sled and several years ago, after watching my hiking buddies lose their sleds off the side of the trail at Baxter, I got a couple of pieces of aluminum from Aubuchons, something like 1/8" x 1/2" x 4', carefully bent them to match the countours of the outer...

    Vt 5 4000'

Righto, it's Burrows. For some reason, even though it's in my "backyard", I seen to have trouble acceptijng that. Thanx for the correction! John

    Vt 5 4000'

Vetmont 4's Agree with pretty much all the above, and Kevin, righto I've been up the Hump a few times! FWIW, I also vote for Sunset Ridge for Mansfield, a great hike, drive up the road as far as you can though right now, there's likely a snowbank about 1.5 miles or so below the campground...

    Recent conditions on Monadnock?

Monadnock I was up there this afternoon (12/25). Microspikes is the word. With those, no problem, a delightful trip up the halfway house road etc. Without microspikes (or full crampons, an overkill), lots of detours around the ice. Enjoy! John

    Multitool question

I just went on the Irwin Tool site out of curiosity and it looks like they don't make the #2 Vice Grip any more. Bummer, it's a great little tool, so I guess I'll take good care of mine.

    Multitool question

Good tool One of the more valuable tools in my little kit, in addition to a multi-tool, is a small Vice Grip, I think mine is a #2. Just like the big Vice Grips, but small and light, and as I've found out several times, it's just the ticket for crimping the metal dookikies on Sherpa and Tubbs...

What's the weather like your way?

Abe Little Ricky, if you're still looking at this and still planning on Abe tomorrow (Saturday), it's raining now at my house at about 1700' but at 3800 on Mansfield it's 30 degrees and snowing with several inches on the ground. If you're doing Abe via the LT from the south I'd guess you'd...

    Additional 4k peak in VT

Mansfield Nose A few years ago I got the detailed topo data of the nose and col from the civil engineering firm working on the preliminary plan for the tower relocation job. It confirmed my suspicion that the nose seems to qualify as a 6th VT 4. I've kept quite about it, thinking that once...
