    Leki Trekking Poles

I bought new poles for the first time in many years. Leki Corklite. I loved them (and the design of the locks) on my first hike - South Carter. But on my second hike - Monroe - the lock on one of the poles failed time after time when I put my full weight on them during the decent. Ammonoosuc...

    I love Baxter State Park

I just got reservations for a long weekend in early Fall, and I'm happier than a 5 year old on Christmas morning. That's all I have to say about that.

Chateauguay Rd. / AT / Bridgewater, VT

I drove that road as far as I could. Then I walked it for far more than the .6 that the guide book suggests. I could not find the AT crossing. Have any of you tried to find this approach to the AT? Did I walk or drive right by it?

    Camel's Hump - Monroe - 11/25

An inch or 2 of new snow all the way. Several patches of ice. We used Microspikes for all but the bottom 1.5miles. The road was ok to the normal parking lot. My guess is that real soon the gate will be closed and everybody will need to use the winter parking lot.

    How do you pronounce......

Schaghticoke? It's from my AT guide for Connecticut, near the New York border.

    AT in Baxter

Just back from another great trip to Baxter. (I'll hold my tongue temporarily on my opinion of the new parking regulations) My questions are regarding the Grassy Pond Trail. Why was it closed for so long? When was it re-opened and designated as the new route of the AT? And why didn't Mr. Ranger...

Asquam Ridge Trail and Mt. Jim

Just curious about why the name "Asquam" (I hope I spelled it right, my maps are at home) does not appear on any of the Dartmouth Outing Club's signs. Every sign that I encountered simply called it the "Ridge Trail". By the way, it really is a great trail. Hey while I'm asking questions, how...

    winter parking Underhill SP, VT

This time around, we would like to try Mt. Mansfield in winter from the west. What are our options for parking? We want to be as close to Underhill State Park as possible. Camping is an option, but we prefer day trips. Thanks, Jim

    Backpacker Mag

Did anyone notice in a recent issue of Backpacker, they named Baxter's Chimney Pond as one of America's best "swimming holes"? Hmmmm. I wonder what the rangers think of that. Should I add a snorkel to my hiking gear?

    Injury on Lafayette 10/13

There was an injured hiker on Lafayette Saturday night. It took quite an effort by many people to get her down to the hut. Does anyone know how things turned out for her on Sunday morning? Thanks, Jim

    Rattlesnakes in CT ?

Backpacker magazine has a section at the end called Waypoints. They have these little tear out cards (wallet size) with brief descriptions of hikes. In the past 2 issues, when mentioning the Sages Ravine/Bear Mt/Mt Frissel area, they say "Caution:Watch for rattlesnakes". Is this for real?

    Baxter Trails

I don't see many trip reports or trail conditions from Baxter State Park. The last time I went to Roaring Brook in June, the trails to Chimney Pond and beyond were closed due to snow. I'm going back in 2 weeks. Please tell me the trails are open. Anybody know? Thanks, Willette Brothers plus The...

Parking on Danby-Landgrove Rd. (VT 10)

I should have scouted this out last week while I was in the area. Oh well. Do you guys know if there is any parking at the AT/LT crossing of Vermont Route 10?

    Lion Head Trail, Mt. Washington

I'm just curious about the difference between the summer route and the winter route. I've hiked the winter route in January, February and April. Last week I hiked the summer route (December). I really didn't sense much of a difference. So, what's the reason for shutting down one vs. the other in...

    Bear Mt. (CT)

Where is the actual summit of Bear Mt? To me it looks like it's about 100 feet to the west of the rock pile monument on the AT. Am I correct? Next question. Is there a trail that leads into Sages Ravine from Rte 41 at the MA/CT border? Thanks,

4 day weekend in Baxter State Park

9/23/05 to 9/26/05 This may have been our most favorite trip to date. Gary and I arrived at the Togue Pond Gate on Friday morning and we were on the Hunt Trail at around noon. It was his first time to hike The Owl. He was not dissapointed. The trail is in great shape and the summits have some...

    Baxter's Tote Road

We're heading into Baxter State Park on September 23. We have a site at South Branch Pond and we plan on doing a repeat hike of the Traveler Loop. But, on day one (travel day) we want to hike The Owl in the south end of the park. So, here's my question: after hiking The Owl, from the trailhead...

East St. in Mt. Wash. State Forest (Mass.)

I've never been to this part of Mass. I'd like to park at the trailhead on East St. at the Mass./Conn. border. I'll be approaching the trailhead from the north. Is the road paved? If not, is it driveable right now (4/8/05)? My guide book says that there is parking for only 4 cars. Is that...
