Checking in From the AT, Part 4

Living on Appalachian time Another week has flown by. The obvious signs are near empty food bags, low energy, and sore feet. I've gone over 350 miles since my journey began almost four weeks ago. My pack has shrunk and I think I have too a little bit. Hard to tell. The days out here seem to last...

Checking in From the AT, Part 3

Timing, planning, and other things beyond my control The past week feels like it was a month or a year ago. Bland now has a certain nostalgia about it. I wound up meeting Clean Shave and sharing a motel room with him and there were others staying there as well, so we actually had a ball there...

Checking in from the AT - Part 2

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." - Ferris Bueller I've always loved this quote and am finding it to be true on the trail, even when you're taking life at two miles per hour. During my first week out of Damascus, I've seen things go...

Checking in from the AT - Part 1

For those unaware, I am currently came down to Damascus, VA for Trail Days and am now hiking north on the AT. I am keeping a blog doublebow.blogspot.com but will also post my somewhat weekly entries here. There are more of a general nature and less trail/peak specific. I hope you find them...

    Katahdin -- Presidents Day Weekend!!

So I'm leading a group for an single day trip up Katahdin over President's Day Weekend. We're going to be doing it as a day hike. The plan is to drive up Friday and spend the night in Millinocket at a motel. Then either Saturday or Sunday (depending on the weather), we'll get an early start...

Abraham and Ellen (VT) -- 1/22/11

On Saturday, Dizzy, Caldwell, and I climbed these two peaks via the ski trails to the ridge. We spotted a car at the Mt Ellen parking lot, and drove to the Lincoln peak area. Going up, we stuck to the trail all the way to the left, stopping in at the lodge half way up which we reached in about...

    Rain pants vs. Ski pants???

For winter hiking, I've been using a pair of Red Ledge full-zip rain pants as a shell over my 3-season hiking pants and this has worked really well for years. The dual zippers have allowed me to reach all the pockets in my hiking pants while still having the shell mostly zipped. Unfortunately...

    Hikin' Sumfin' Saturdee!

I need to get out for a hike. Bad. I know it's only been two weeks, but it feels like two months. I'm considering the following: Whiteface & Passaconaway Isolation Carrigain (could be persuaded to do loop) Kinsmans (could be persuaded to do whole ridge) Garfield Any of these would be good...

    Whirlwind Highpointing Roadtrip! -- 8/20-23

Well, I'm back on here after too long away... Last Friday night, Magpie and I drove from NH down to PA and spent the night. Saturday morning, we set out for Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we passed Amish in their buggies, a ton of beautiful wind turbines, farm...

Kinsmans via Mt Kinsman Tr -- 12/28/09

Applejack and I parked at the new trailhead and saw three other vehicles. We got a late (post 11a) start. I found the rerouted start of the trail less agreeable than the old start, but the parking situation is greatly improved. Shortly before reaching the sugar shack, we ran into Kevin, Judy and...

East Osceola & Osceola from the Kanc -- 12/26/09

Snowshoes not required to get to E. Osceola, though somewhat helpful on the steeper sections. Some traction required. Snow was somewhat loose, though one did not posthole wearing microspikes. Section between peaks was looser still. Snowshoes more helpful here, but still not a requirement.

    NW CT Off-season Camping???

My girlfriend and I will soon be in Northwest Connecticut for a little bit of hiking (Mt Frissell area) and are looking for a place to camp in that area. Any suggestions for this time of year?

    Garfield & Galehead Midweek

I'm planning on heading up Garfield and spending the night at the campsite up there this week. I'm sort of working on staying at all the different backcountry sites. The next day I'm planning to continue on to Galehead and head out on Gale River Trail. My plan is to head in on the Garfield...

A NEHHers First Trip to the ADKs!

So, for the Fourth of July Jen wanted to go to the Adirondacks. I was firmly against it as I'd been planning to finish my CAT3500s before ever going to the ADKs. I told her I'd only do it if Marcy was part of the plan as I'm working on state highpoints (sort of). She agreed that we'd do it on...

    Wildcats, a Different Way!

So this TR is about a hike that happened a few weeks ago, but I've been away from the board so at least I'm back posting now. My girlfriend (Jen) wanted to climb the Wildcats for her birthday as they were two of the four peaks she needed toward her 48. I said sure and proceeded to try to make a...

Franconia Ridge or The Hike That Was Almost My Last -- 1/31/09

I know what I'm doing in the mountains. Unfortunately, knowledge (and a dash of pride) can be a dangerous thing. I've been known to roll the dice and take some chances from time to time, but this time I almost rolled snake eyes. Saturday morning I found that I had overslept. I figured I'd...

    Tuesdays with Moriah -- 1/27/09

Coming off a great hike on Monday and a good night's rest at Hiker's Paradise, I decided to try my fortunes again yesterday. After fueling up with a big breakfast at Welsh's, I headed over to the Carter-Moriah trailhead and once again got a 10am start. I seemed slow out of the gate frequently...

    Cold Killing Carters -- 1/26/09

When I climbed Starr King and Waumbek on Saturday, I found that afterward I was feeling somewhat better and that my cold wasn't as intense. Sunday with not having hiked, I found I was feeling the same as the day before. It got me thinking that maybe hiking was easing my cold symptoms. Since I...

    S#!*loaf & the Bigalows -- 1/17/09

So I was staying up at the Maine Roadhouse for the weekend with big plans. Soon the weather and ski patrol was going to squash those plans. On that Saturday, I headed up the Tote Road on Sugareloaf in -18 temps and the ski gestapo soon stopped me. They asked to see my ticket and I said that I...

    Starr King & Waumbek -- 1/24/09

Due to my having a bad head cold, me and three friends downgraded our plans and did this hike. We parked at the monument near the Irving station since when we tried to park in the "Trail Parking" lot one of the cars got stuck. We barebooted to the summer trailhead, then put on snowshoes. The...
