Monadnock via White Dot and White Cross - 12/4 16

Time for the annual pre-winter tuneup climb on Mondanock. Trails were bare with some trace visible snow. No real accumulations though. There was some ice on the trail, but nothing we couldn't work around. White Cross was icier than White Dot. We brought microspikes, but didn't use them...

NH Supreme Court upholds Negligent Hiking Award

For those interested, the NH Supreme Court upheld a negligent hiking award today in the amount of about $9,000.00. The Defendant required a rescue on the Franconia Range in bad weather when his artificial hip dislocated. If I do this right, a link to the decision should be below...

Garfield Attempt - Gale River Rd., Garfield Trail - 2/21

If at first you don't succeed, wait a week and go back after someone else has broken the last mile of trail. Mark and I went back and finished Garfield today with Andy, Colleen, and Stella the dog. Trail is well packed out all the way to the top. Lots of snow up high. Given the amount of...

3700' is right. I guess I was a little loopier than I thought last night.

Garfield Attempt - Gale River Rd., Garfield Trail - 2/21

Set out a little after 8:00 am with a temp of -10 at the car. Mark was excited about his new telescoping poles until he realized they telescoped on the trail. After a couple of duct tape repair attempts, Mark was down to one pole and we proceeded to the Garfield Trail. We were pleased to find...

Liberty & Flume via Bike Trail, Liberty Springs Tr., and Franconia Ridge Trial - 1/24

Liberty & Flume via Bike Trail, Liberty Springs Tr., and Franconia Ridge Trial - 1/24 Parked at the Basin. Trail is a little choppy in spots down low. Some solid ice spots required care, but were microspikeable. Snow is a little heavier up high with a couple of fresh inches on the Franconia...

Jackson via Webster Jackson Trail - 1/3

After last week's hike of Field and Wiley, we jumped to the other side of Crawford Notch today for a quick trip up Jackson before the storm hit. Wore microspikes all day. For the most part, the trail is set up nicely. A little ice near the bottom, and the chute at the top is a bit tricky...

Field and Willey via Avalon and Willey Range Trs. - 12/27

Trail Conditions: Some snow, some mud, a little ice. Is it April? A lot of bare spots down low. Not much snow up high, but there is enough and it is pretty well consolidated. 2 water crossings that required care. No blow downs, looks like someone had been through with a saw recently. We wore...

Monadnock via White Dot Trail - 12/21

Trail Conditions: Icy. Not much snow. No issues with water crossings. A couple of blow downs that were no big deal. We wore microspikes all day. There were a couple of spots where crampons would have been useful, but it never lasted long enough to justify digging them out of the pack...

2 Night Backpacking Loop for this weekend??

We crashed on the Livermore Road on the second night. It started to rain a little bit on the way up South Tripyramid so we beat it down to get off the ledges before they got really wet. Plenty of solitude on the trails, but we saw people on the summits and at the shelter.

2 Night Backpacking Loop for this weekend??

Thanks everyone. I didn't think we had time for the Grafton Loop, so we did TJsName's loop - Sandwich Dome, Flat Mt. Pond Shelter, Whiteface, the Sleepers, and almost to the top of South Tripyramid. (It started to rain, so we beat it down the slide shortly before getting to the summit.) We...

2 Night Backpacking Loop for this weekend??

Any suggestions on a good 3 day, 2 night backpacking loop for this weekend in the Whites or VT? I've been playing around with the maps, but am just not coming up with any inspirational ideas. No real agenda other than getting out, avoiding nasty river crossings, and having an appropriate place...

Monadnock via Old Toll Road and White Arrow Trail - 2/16

Trail Conditions: About 12 inches of new snow. Pretty well consolidated until you bust out on the rocks. A little bit of ice just before busting out as well. Lots of unconsolidated snow once you're out on the rocks. It was a bit challenging hoisting ourselves up loose snow banks near the...
