    Bear Alert Near Autoroad...

We saw the mama and her cubs near the base of the auto road this weekend while driving some friends to the top for a recon for next weekend's Road Race. The mama was right by the roadside and seemed pretty small. She took off down the slope as our car got closer, and we saw her with the cubs...

4K the Wimpy Way! (Hiking the Auto Road: 28-Mar-2009)

Ridgerunner, I think yours is the best kind of story about the Auto Road. Yes, we don't want roads up all the mountains, and yes, as hikers we wish more people would experience the mountains "our" way under their own power. But there are many who cannot or would not have the chance to experience...

    Calling all AT thru hikers...

There is a lot of good information out there on the AT. whiteblaze.net is a good site, although sometimes I have to say I find it a bit overwhelming. Before Snowman and I set out on the AT in 2005, I picked a few journals from trailjournals.com and read them. It was always interesting to see...

    woodpecker breakfasting in Krumville

The last time I saw a pileated woodpecker was on a run this fall. This one was pecking away at a telephone pole along the side of a quiet country road. Could he really have found anything in a telephone pole? Regardless, they are pretty magnificent birds, and I always smile whenever I have...

    Karl Meltzer finished the AT

I agree. I'm impressed he kept hiking/running even when he realized his illness and time off meant he wouldn't beat the record. Very cool! :)

Long Trail, Lincoln Gap to App Gap, 9/23

Thanks for the TR and reminder that this section of the LT is on my list to do soon! We still have Ellen to do to finish off our NE67 list, and it looks like doing this stretch from one gap to the other would be a great way to hit that peak. :)

    100 Mile Wilderness and Katahdin!

Thanks for the congrats you guys! :) As for Audrey's question, next on the list is the MDI Marathon on October 19th. All this hiking has to help us endurance-wise, right?! Then, I think finishing off the LT is in the cards for next year. After all, we've already done the southern half!

    100 Mile Wilderness and Katahdin!

Snowman (or Trailbiscuit as he's known here) and I set out Sunday, September 14th from Monson to do the 100 mile Wilderness and summit Katahdin - the final stretch in our ongoing four-year quest to finish the AT! It started to rain on us about three miles into the first day, but it did make the...

Date: 9/7 and 9/8/08 Trails: AT from Rangeley to Caribou Valley Road Conditions and comments: Man, was it windy atop Saddleback, the Horn and Saddleback Junior on Sunday! We were being buffeted around like crazy. This was our remaining 24 miles before we start our last section of the AT this...

South and North Crocker via the AT

Date: August 31, 2008 Trails: AT from Caribou Valley Road to Rt. 27 Conditions: Trail in great shape and very dry. Closer to Rt. 27 someone had been in brushing the trail recently - thanks! Only one or two blowdowns, and not much mud to speak of at all, which was a nice change from our hikes...

Success Pond Road on a bike?

Success Pond Road I have no idea how it would be on a bike, but Trailbiscuit and I were pleasantly surprised with the condition of the road on Monday when we did our Mahoosuc Notch hike. We started up the Goose Eye Trail and hiked through the notch to Grafton Notch, where we had previously left...

AT from East Flagstaff Rd to Caratunk

Date: 8/4/08 Trails: AT from East Flagstaff Rd to Caratunk Conditions: Trail was a stream, mud pit, swamp and river in almost all spots. The rivers were running high, and we had to ford three streams plus the Pierce Pond dam. Yes, there were a few dry areas, but the overwhelming word for the...

Date: 7/27 to 7/28/08 Trails: Followed AT from Franconia Notch to Crawford Notch. Conditions: Liberty Springs Trail near bottom a bit wet. Franconia Ridge in good shape. Trail down Garfield a stream in many spots, making descending the rock ledges a bit difficult and time consuming. Ethan...

    AT from Caratunk to Monson

Date: 7/20 through 7/22/08 Trail: AT from Caratunk to Monson Conditions: Trail was extremely muddy. Could use bog bridges in too many spots to name! But especially atop Moxie Bald Mountain, where the treadway is narrow through the sheep laurel, etc and people are beginning to tramp down the...

    The SUMMER flower thread

Snowman and I were out on a 3-day backpack on the AT this past Sunday through Tuesday, hiking north from Caratunk to Monson. We saw lots of bunchberries with beautiful red berries, blue beads turning blue, a few wood sorrel, Indian Pipe, lots of blueberries as well as the following two plants...

rides in the Rangely-Stratton AT area

We did end up calling Stratton Motel, and had them help us with a shuttle last weekend to complete our hike on the AT over the Bigelows. Very friendly and worked out great. We'll likely be calling them for a shuttle later in the summer when we do the section from Rt. 4, Rangeley to Rt. 27, Stratton.
