    Hiking Wildcat?

Do you still need a trail pass from the ski area? Although I’d like to do a loop, I might be stuck on an out and back from the ski area. Any advice? Thanks.

    Plastic taste from Camelback?

I just got my first Camelback reservoir and the water has a pronounced plastic like taste. I've only used it three times and imagine the taste will go away in time, but is there any to get rid of it faster? Thanks.

    Lincoln-Lafayette loop

Falling Waters to Bridle Path. Ideal winter conditions, packed powder throughout. The Falling Waters were still today, covered by a thick blanket of snow and ice. I used Microspikes the whole way. There were a few places that snowshoes would have been better, but we're imparactical overall...

What is this mountain seen from I-93N?

Does anybody know what mountain this is? When you are driving north on I93, just beyond the 70.4 mile marker if you look slightly to the left, there is a very picturesque mountain. You get another more limited glimpse about mile 72. It is a fair distance away, since it is not there when...

    Carter Dome via Its Trail

19 Mile Brook was a highway. Carter Dome Trail to Zeta Pass was a high quality secondary road. Beyond Zeta Pass, some misguided person did not wear snowshoes and wrecked the foot path. After rejoining Carter Moriah, the way to the summit was fine. I did not go over Mt Hight, but others said the...

    Bike rack at Crawford Notch?

I'd like to leave a bike in the train station area to use to get back to my car at the Ethan Pond trailhead after a loop hike. Does anyone know if there is a bike rack there or at the AMC lodge? Any other suggestions if there is no rack? Thanks

    Vicinity of the Jewell Trail

Lots of snow out there. Soft, beautiful powder. The lower portion will have formed a crust by morning, but there is only powder higher up. I ran into Mike P on the lower portion of the trail and we floundered around for more than three hours breaking out part of the trail and several false...

    Isolation by Rocky Branch, etc

Hike on February 14. Route: Rocky Branch Trail, Engine Hill bushwack, Isolation Trail, Davis Path Conditions: Essentially hard pack with some drifting towards the end. I used microspikes until close to Davis Path and then snowshoes. Comments: Get it while it lasts. A fast, tracked route to...

Liberty Springs and FRT to Liberty

Date: Sunday, January 31 Conditions: Firm base with some squeaky packed powder. Stream crossings covered, although one was a bit scary with water running beneath an ice top. Summit with minimal snow. No significant blowdowns. FRT was not broken to the north. Some footprints on Flume Slide...

Gale River Trail to Lincoln Woods via Bonds

Date of Hike: Saturday August 8 Trail Conditions: Gale River Trail - some muddy spots on flat region, perfect after the second crossing Garfield Ridge Trail - clear and surprisingly dry Twinway - to S Twin has some water on the rocks, but otherwise fine. The portion to the Bondcliff Trail...

    Davis Path to Giant Stairs

With stops at Mt Crawford (X2) and the Mt Resolution ledges. The Davis Path was well-maintained and easy to follow. No significant blow-downs, etc. Trail was damp, but within reason given the recent weather. A few portions beyond Mt Crawford had running water in the foot path, but not a...

Mt Adams: Valley Way to Gulfside to Lowes

Hiked 3/18/08 Valley Way hard packed with some powder up high. Traction helpful. Trails above treeline were icy, crampons essential. Ice axe would have been reassuring, but I did okay without. Beautiful day, sunny and clear, almost dead calm on summit. I took Gulfside to Lowes Path to...

Madison via Valley Way, Watson Path

Madison via Valley Way, Osgood Trail Date 3/10/08 Valley Way in excellent hard pack condition with powder ranging from a trace at the bottom to 4-6" up high. Very nicely broken out by a group of five ahead of me. Traction needed. Osgood Trail to the summit was icy and frozen granular...

    Cog closed this winter?

I heard that the Mt Washington Cog Railroad will not be open for skiing this winter. Does anyone know if the Base Road will still be plowed? If not, it sounds like Lion's Head is the only (reasonable) way up this year.

Would someone please remind me how to get to the Galehead Trail from the Beaver Brook parking area. Thanks!

    Is Zealand skiable?

Does anyone know if the Zealand Road and trail to the Twinway are skiable after the recent rain? I'm planning to try for the Zealand Mountain tomorrow and would like to know if using skis for the flat part would be helpful. Thanks.

    No problem parking at Cog

It costs five dollars to park (in the lower lot). This is a relatively new policy according to the man there this morning.

    Question re:last year's Guyot death

During the analysis of the death of the hiker in the severe cold snap last winter, I never saw anything about building a snow cave, either here or in the accident report in Appalachia. Since the hiker was generally well equipped, wouldn't this have been a viable option? Disclaimer: I've...

    Crawford Path to Mt Washington?

Has anyone gone up Crawford Path to summit recently? Any idea if this is a viable route now?
