Trail Conditions: Signal Ridge has some avoidable mud down low, stream crossings easy. Carrigain Notch is in great shape. Desolation trail in fine shape but very rough and rocky.
Special Equipment Required: Poles were of great help for me.
Comments: This is a great alternative to up and back on signal ridge trail. The Carrigain Notch trail is beautiful and very under-utilized. I managed to see no other hikers until the summit on a clear, beautiful day with a packed trailhead parking lot. The Desolation Trail is steep and rough - 2500 feet of elevation gain packed into less than 2 miles. It reminded me a lot of the rougher sections the Kinsman Ridge Trail.
