Trail Conditions: The Flat Mountain Pond Trail to the McCrillis junction (1.7 mi) was smooth and well-defined. A few boggy spots and a bit of slushy snow but nothing of concern.

The Whiteface river crossing is difficult and a bit dangerous. Water level is quite high, with evidence of a recent micro-flood along the banks.

The McCrillis Trail was mostly snow-free for the first 2 miles, after which the snow becomes progressively deeper. 3' + in places. Several boggy crossings in the hardwoods; some blue ice in the evergreens and up towards the summit.

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes - necessary after about 2.5 mi. Postholeing was a big problem. Trekking poles very useful.

Comments: The Whiteface River crossing was slippery and difficult. We had to create a makeshift bridge over boulders with a log about 1/4 mi upstream. Getting wet is likely.

The McCrillis trail in general sees little use, and is very obscure (almost non-existent) for the first .5 miles or so. Take care in this area not to get lost, as it easy to lose your way mistaking lichens for blazes. There are yellow blazes but they are very, very faint and would only be seen by an experienced eye. After .5 miles the trail becomes more apparent. Plenty of bear and moose scat in the area.
