Led seven members of the local AOA group to Mt. Hibbard today (on the 52WAV list). This hike kept getting rained out, so this was the third attempt. Have been wanting to do this for the last year.

Started off at Ferncroft trailhead, took Old Mast Rd. to Wonalancet Range Trail; opted to add the .4 steep to Wonalancet summit (according to a Hike-NH trip report of 3/2009), which turned out to be less steep than the previous .4 to that junction. Then back to the upper junction of the WRT and the Short Cut Trail.

Hit a couple of spur trails with views. Never saw a sign or cairn for Hibbard (although it says wooded summit), so I'm sure we were there. After starting to head back down the same way we came up, we decided to vary the hike and make it a loop, so we took a right onto the Walden Trail, ate lunch at one of the lookouts, and then another right onto the Old Mast Trail, which brought us back to Ferncroft T/H. There were two steep sections coming down, but manageable.

It was warmer so we kept a slower pace, especially for Heidi, although she managed to find the streams at the beginning and end of the hike. Only saw one other woman. Trail conditions were good, but watch where you step: lotsa moose poop.

Total mileage, about 5.5. Time, 5 hrs. Also, no knee pain. Hooray!
