    single vs double wall tents

Any opinions on the merits of a single wall tent vs a double wall. The lighter weight of the single wall appeals to me but I worry that the ventilation may not be enough for good ol muggy new england.

    internal verses external backpacks

external frame gets my vote, rides way better than an internal on me. I've not found any balance problems with having the higher center of gravity with an external. The only time I use an internal frame is when my stuff weighs in at 25 lbs or less.

    Sedona day hikes

Oak Creek Canyon is a good day hike - lots of interesting geology.

    Narrow or Wide-Mouth Nalgene

both have their advantages - the small mouth allows you to drink and walk at the same without spilling any liquid on yourself, but has the annoying habit of dumping so much water in your mouth that it comes out your nose. The large mouth avoids this problem by dumping the water on yourself -...

    Major Nor-easter for New England

I've read the internet weather postings - from what they're telling me, it's time to panic, I mean can you imagine 12 inches of snow? And next they're probably going to say "only drive if you have to" and let's not forget "dangerously cold windchills" (just when I was going to go out naked in...

    long-term weather trends this "winter"

Yes, let's enlighten the unenlightened, ready State of Fear by Michael Crichton and then tell me about global warming.

    The Evolution of GEAR

the best gear ever - Nylon. Most all I wear in the summer and half what I wear in the winter, it's warm, drys quick, wears pretty well. It's replace all the cotton - from my sneakers to my hat. On a philosphical note, the BEST gear to have is a brain (common sense). Even with the bad stuff...

    Hking by myself

At the risk of being labeled a gun freak, might I suggest you take a course in gun safety and purchase a small handgun to carry with you. It's really just a psychological crutch but it might help. Carrying it unloaded is probably the best idea - it's just there to make you fell better.

    Work or Hike

You may need to check to see if you need some kind of license to lead trips in Vermont. Here in Maine, if you get paid for this type of thing you need a Maine Guide's License.

Do you wear a hat in summer?

Ditto on the Tilley being good in the hot - used one last summer in 100 degree heat in Nevada - definitely helped keep me cool. i wear it all the time kayaking.

predicting the weather on the trail

Has anyone learned to predict the weather by "feel". Seems like after a number of days or weeks spent on the trail, one would learn to recognize the subtle signs that most of us citified folks miss. What prompted this was the fact that all the elephants in Indonesia went to high ground before...

    Suspension bridges in New England

Theres one up past Farmington (in New Sharon I think) that you can drive over. Not the place to go unless you have infinite faith in bridge engineers.

Grafton Loop Trail to Puzzle Mt.

I climbed Puzzle mtn twice last year - a very nice climb with lots of nice views. Not really steep, just a couple of rock scrambles that you can easily carry a full pack up. I only went to the top of the mountain so can't advise after that. Hopefully, I'll get time enough to do the whole...
