My first cannister!! (Dorset, and Mendon) 8/17/08

As for the pic of the old cabin, we used to hike up into that area often when I was a kid in the 1960's. It was much more open, with lots of remnants from logging camps, including huge piles of Black Label beer cans. There was also a slide at the top of the valley that had a log chute running...

Mendon Peak VT - bushwhack to avoid stream crossings

We tried this a few years ago when it was high, but not nearly as wet as it has been. The area above the first crossing was extremely mucky, sinking in 8-12 inches into boot sucking mud. Might have been okay a bit higher on the ridge but we did not try it.

    airplane prohibited items?

When we went to Scotland, we put the poles in a heavy Cardboard shipping tube to help protect against getting bent, then inside a large duffle along with everything else for the hikes except the boots which we wore so if the worst case happened and luggage was lost, we wouldn't have to break in...

The Great Cocoa Incident of 2006

It's not just out in the woods that deadly Hot chocolate strikes. I was attacked last night while sitting in the beanbag chair watching "The Mummy Returns". A sniffing beagle took my attention away for just a second and the hot chocolate jumped out of the cup onto my white shirt! I had even...

    just had to share this

I never hiked in anything but Dunham hunting boots for the first 30 years of hiking. (first pairs were hand-me-down's when my father got new ones). Winter hiking was Johnson wool pants over jeans over long-johns and a down jacket. I admit that hiking boots and the newer clothing are more...

    Hard

Walking from the curb to the terminal in Glasgow Airport returning from hiking in the highlands. I tried to turn back several times, but with my wife's encouragement and security not letting me back thru the X-ray, I finally made it.

    Coffee before a hike

Starbucks French roast - ground just before making - more beans than called for per cup of water - Black. Only way I can stomach Dunkin' Donuts coffee is with lots of cream and sugar to hide the taste.

    Coffee before a hike

No, but in college, Grapenuts with Rootbeer was a big favorite of mine!

    Coffee before a hike

Always. Never noticed any downsides. I have also never had a problem drinking coffee late and falling right to sleep. If you are really in need of the caffiene hit, I recommend Vietnamese Iced Coffee - Espresso dripped into sweetened condensed milk over Ice! I've never had anything stronger...

Do those in ME have a sense of humor?

I was fortunate enough to see the person who did the Bert and I records perform in the mid 70's at UVM. I can't recall his name, I think it was Dodge, but he was killed in a bike accident in Hawaii if my memory is correct. Anyway, he would come on stage with a 3 foot stack of hats and put a...

    Chic Choc's this summer

About a year ago, I asked for info on hiking in the Scottish Highlands, the inputs I got helped tremendously in planning our trip. this summer, we will probably stay closer to home and are thinking of going North to the Chic Choc's in Quebec. I was there once about 35 years ago so remember...

    Jay Peak anomaly

Just wondering, how many places down the NE 100 highest did Jay drop, if any, when they blew the top off? I wonder the same thing about Pico as the top has been extensively worked over by the ski area.
