    One Day Winter Presidential Traverse

it's not nearly as hard as people think it is. on a day with good weather, it may actually be easier than doing it in the summer because the snow flattens the trail out where there would usually be rocks. of course, on a bad day you may very well die. just chose the day carefully, and know where...

    lumbar packs?

i also saw the arcteryx q10 on sierra trading post. if i should decide to buy a pack, this looks like the one i would go with. perfect size, two big nalgene pockets, looks awfully nice to me. luke

    lumbar packs?

these little things have been intriguing me lately. it looks like mountainsmith makes some pretty good ones. i would like one that can hold a couple of nalgenes, a pb&j, and maybe an extra layer or two. i certainly wouldn't need anything over 800 cubes. what have your experiences been with these...

If you had only one mountain?

washington. it's got a lot of it all. i don't know how many miles of trails there are, but that one mountain could keep someone busy for a few days. sure there are an awful lot of people, but hey, it's nice to have someone to talk to sometimes. there are approaches from every direction, and...

    hilton's tent city question

i got the pack, found hilton's no problem, but i accidentally got on the E train on the green line, which is apparently the only one that doesn't go through kenmore on the entire green line. damnit. it was all easily fixed though, and i found hilton's to be a funny little store, it's not the...

    hilton's tent city question

i'm planning on getting a new pack, soon, and none of the store around here have the one i'm looking for. i'm going to be in boston on tuesday, and hilton's website says that they have the pack i'm looking for (an osprey aether 60, because i'm sure you wanted to know). the site also says that...

    Short Vermont hike

props for putney mountain? it's only 20 minutes from bratt, a very short hike, but there are great views on a clear day. to the east it's monadnock, and to the northwest there's stratton, mount snow, and bromley, with other hills and dales all over the place. pm me for directions, i know my way...

    Vasque Hiking Boots

i tried shoo goo myself actually. that's no good for snowshoeing with. i knew that super glue wouldn't hold anything down, so i just ran it on the edge like it's a bead of caulk. it took multiple layers, but it's hard as a rock now. luke

    Acadia/Maine hiking advice

sargent is west of cadillac, but east of somes sound. it's sort of between the town of mt. desert and northeast harbor. luke

    Vasque Hiking Boots

i rock the very boots you speak of. i've had them for a couple of years, and they've held up admirably. the only thing that has happened is the rubber sole came slightly unglued from the leather upper part of the boot, this was easily fixed with some super glue though. i've read in many places...

    coleman white gas

ahhh, thanks for the knowledge. it's good to know that i won't be gunking up my brand new stove with the same stuff that semi-trucks run off of. i got the internationale for conveinience in a pinch, but i've heard that white gas is still preferable with this, and most other liquid fuel stoves. luke

    coleman white gas

today i bought a whisperlite internationale which is my first liquid fuel stove. i got a 22 oz fuel bottle to go with it, and a gallon of coleman brand fuel. nowhere on the bottle does it say "white gas", so i want to know if that's what it is. it says it's for coleman stoves (the car camping...

    Acadia/Maine hiking advice

well, i fancy myself as something of a resident acadia expert, seeing as the park is literally right outside my door. when i wake up in the morning one of the first thigns i see is bar island. take a walk out there at low tide one day and check that out for sure. my favorite hike links together...

    Lnt

good thread going here folks, this is one that's always worth discussing. although i think that "lnt" is a superficial and undefined benchmark, i believe that it is essential that we minimize our impact outdoors. for me, this means not hiking much of this month (sad face) because the woods are...

    New Gear?

this is my little bit of bragging... my college's only 2 well known graduates are a) paul newman's daughter who runs the "newman's own" brand (she also reintroduced the peregrine falcon to acadia national park) and b) the guy who invented the steripen, i think he lives and works out of blue...
