Great day on Algonquin with some friends who drove all the way from VA for one day of hiking in the dacks. we had 3" of new snow on an icy crust all the way to whale's tail. Need spikes or crampons from the waterfall on. the snow deepened to a new 8-12" at the wright junction and deeper as we...

snow depth in the high peaks?

Does anyone know if there has been new snow accumulation in the high peaks this week? I heard something about lake placid getting 7" yesterday. I'm headed up on Friday and will be prepared with both crampons and snowshoes. Trying to anticipate trail conditions.

    climbing skins

I'm loving BC skiing more every time I do it. I have been using a set of fischer s-bound outbound crown skis. They seem fine, though, i have nothing to compare them to. Question: Can anyone recommend climbing skins for these skis. I see a lot of options on the web, but I'm not sure if...

Is Upper Lean-To near Cliff/Redfield still there?

Love those shots of uphill leanto. I was there in mid January...about half that much snow.

    Cliff, Skylight, Gray, Marcy 1/16-18

Packed in from Upper Works to Uphill leanto. Snowshoes the whole way. Streams are not all frozen, making some crossings tricky. Broke trail to cliff. Clear trails to 4 corners and skylight. Marcy was windswept down to ice. We all switched to crampons. Bushwacked from Marcy to Gray...

    Marshall, Colden, Giant/RPR (1/17-19)

Three days of day hiking, two nights in the Keene Valley Hostel. We hiked Marshall on Wed from upper works. We were reading as low as -13 driving in the Upper works road. Blue sky, no wind...very cold. The temp never rose above zero according to our mercury, but it was a perfect sunny, windless...

    Lower dix range advice

    Lower dix range advice

thanks for the help. It looks to me like an even trade off. I dislike hiking roads, i.e. the elk lake road from the caretaker's home. So I am leaning toward the boquet route--a new approach for me, and hence, an adventure.

    Lower dix range advice

Hi, I'm looking for helping on approaching the lower Dix Range in winter. I know the Elk Lake approach, but have heard of people going in the bouquet and up E.Dix (Carson or Grace, I'm not sure which it is). Under current conditions, which would you recommend for a day hike with the hope of...

    BC Ski advice

Another question Dave, your BC web site is awesome and very helpful. It is the only one I could find that answered some of my most fundamental questions. I'm pretty much using it as my guide as I look for gear. Here is another question... I bought a pair of Voile HD 3 pin bindings. Any...

    BC Ski advice

Thanks, I have already read Dave's entire site. It was very helpful (I've also emailed him my question). Basically, my issue comes down to this: I found a really great sale locally on Fischer Outbound Crowns--they have only a few pairs. The little Fischer chart shows that I woudl take a...
