Dial and Nippletop by Leach trail 1-14-08

Went in through Lake Road, the first 1/4 mile a liitle icy, then decent powder on road. The Leach trail had 1" of powder over hard packed snow with a few open water areas on Noonmarks shoulder. The rest of the trail had 3-4" of new snow over hard packed snow. Stream crossings were manageable...

    Kaaterskill High Peak

Taking advantage of a day off in the holiday week, Pete decided to finish his 3500's off. Grover and I were glad to be able to join him on this trip. Sunny skies and mild temps greeted us at the trailhead. We packed everything for this trip not knowing what the conditions were going to be and...

    Now I've seen everything!

Tom I am glad someone in your group took some photos, I have some friends that thought we were seeing things. Grover and I had followed the goats from the summit of Blackhead and we were kicking ourselves from not having a camera. It was nice meeting your group in the col, we had a great day for...

    Big Slide and LWJ 2-25-06

I thought that Steve earning his winter 46 needed a longer trip report. We (Steve, Ed, Chris and I) left the motel early and met John at the garden. By 6:00am we were on our way to the 1st Brother, the rocks were barely covered but snowshoes helped with the ice under the snow. The views were...

Adjusting Mountainerring boots to problem foot?

Have you tried an orthotic? I was fitted for new ski boots this year and suffer from bunions myself and the fitter suggested I try an orthotic to stabilize my foot. I haven't broke down for the custom one yet, but the the over the counter ones have helped a lot and I will purchase a custom later...

    Neversink bridge ???

Pete That would be quite a lot of work, you almost wonder if it would be easier to move the trail to another crossing although I think there is a lot of history there, I think the Denning Leanto used to be in that area. Matt One of the guys in the group needs Balsalm Cap so I think we will go...

    Neversink bridge ???

Pete That looks like the bridge but I bet the Neversink is a lot higher now than in the first photo. That's too bad that 2 weeks of hard work can be wiped out by Mom Nature in a weekend. I wonder what the best fix for the bridge would be. I think this is 3rd time that has washed out in the last...

    Neversink bridge ???

Thanks Matt I did find a site for the Neversink at Claryville http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ny/nwis/uv?01435000 which I think is a ways downstream and it just gives the waterflow not the depth but it still looks like it is cranking. I know that the scary log over the stream washed a few months ago...

    Neversink bridge ???

I was thinking of trying Lone and Rocky this Sunday and was wondering if the bridge had been replaced over the Neversink near Denning? Also wondered what the stream crossings might be like. Thanks dale

    Snowy mtn NY in winter

My son and climbed Snowy about 10 days ago and the water crossings were open and required some rock jumping so skis would be tough. And when the climbing got steep, the snow got deep requiring snowhoes. The weather has been real changeable so I'm not sure what's there now but I would definitely...

    Car break ins

Don't leave valuables in your car My son called from the WMNF, his girlfriends car and 7 other cars had their windows smashed. They took his wallet and ID and some cash from her. But it was raining and everything else was soaked. He is really bummed out, it wasn't a good introduction to the...

Ideas for 3-4 day trip in Whites

My son and girlfriend are thinking of a 3-4 day backpack trip in the White Mountains in early June. We primarily hike and camp in the ADKs or Catskills so really don't have much of clue where to start. They are looking to hit a few of the smaller peaks and are looking for some good camping...

    Open blister care

There used be something in drug stores called compeed or something like that. They worked great on blisters. You put it right over the blister and it protected the skin and you left it on until it fell off. Otherwise I would use a moleskin donut around the blister and a salve like neosporin. big D

    Winter route up Cliff?

Couchybar A group of us did Cliff 3/14 and the trail is suberb now. It is hard packed and fast to Flowed Lands and once across Flowed Lands it is very easy to follow and very open for a trail on Cliff. If you were at the trail head early enough this would be a easy day hike, most of the people...
