Have done this many times in summer but never in winter. The trail is about 1 hour long before you start the real climbing. There are some little hills and a lot of stream crossings. Is it better to ski or shoe up to this point? Also I should be able to change into crampons at this point right?

My son and climbed Snowy about 10 days ago and the water crossings were open and required some rock jumping so skis would be tough. And when the climbing got steep, the snow got deep requiring snowhoes. The weather has been real changeable so I'm not sure what's there now but I would definitely have snowshoes and crampons, and wait for more snow for skis.
