Unusual story: Man, dog hurt in fall

Duly noted. Looking back, I wonder if I made the right decision about continuing on because there were a couple moments where things got pretty hairy. Had I NOT had the dog with me I wouldn’t have thought twice about the conditions (other than being careful) bit with the dog it was an entirely...

Unusual story: Man, dog hurt in fall

I ran into a situation yesterday where I honestly thought I was going to lose my dog to a fall so it's strange that I this subject came up only last week on VFTT! We made it through okay with a combination of team work and patience. A leash was key in maintaining control over Trooper while we...

Stoney Brook Trial (Oct 17th). ------------------------------ Lots of water flowing down the trail. Muddy in spots. No Ice. Carter-Moriah Trail from Imp Shelter to Zeta Pass (Oct 18th): ----------------------------------------------------------- Minimal snow and Ice below 3500 feet. Closer...

    Stating the obvious- Traction Required

Yesterday, I ran into several sections of steep ledge covered in glare ice between the Imp Shelter and North Carter that would have been utterly impassible without traction (Microspikes or better). Even with the Microspikes we (the dog and I) really had to take our time and take it in short...

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

Thanks for all the help and advice everyone! We ended up taking the Lonesome Lake Trail to the Fishin' Jimmy Trail. FJ was very rugged but Trooper handled it very well. If he were a year or two older I would not take the FJ given the level of athleticism it requires (jumping up on high rocks...

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

Thanks for all the help guys! I usually only take him to places I have been before that I know won't be challenge. All this info will help my wife worry a little less about our "fir-baby" running into trouble! :)

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

Hi Bill, Thanks for the pictures. I think he'll do fine based on what he's seen on previous hikes. It helps to know that beyond the pond things are better too. BTW: I ran into you and Sheep on Mt. Willey back in mid-Feb. I was with a group from this VFTT (Scott, BobandGeri etc). Geri and I were...

    New Plans, remote flat backpack

How about lincoln woods to 13-Falls? There's barely any elevation gain and nothing approaching rugged. 8.16 miles at a slow-medium pace... I just noticed the 6 mile limit... the 8 miles feels like 6, and there are lots of ponds and streams and some great views. It has a remote feel about it...

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

Hi Mohamed, We will avoid this one then! I had not considered this route due to the extra driving time - I'll check out the WMG... Thanks for the help! Anyone have experience on this trail with a dog?

I thought I should also mention that this will be in the next week or two, in good weather.

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog??? Hi Folks, I'm planning a solo hike up to Kinsman pond with my mature (8 year-old) dog. I have never hiked in that area before (except for Cannon) but I am familair with the area and I am a fairly experienced at 4-season hiking and camping in the whites...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

This is a good point. I heard someone railing against Pickens for pushing his plan while owning investments in wind and nat-gas. I guess it can be seen two ways:He's scammng everyone, OR he knows a good plan when he sees one and is putting his money where his mouth is. He openly admits he...

Missing Massachusetts Hiker located and safe

Seems fishy to me! They are slowing adding more tenets to the hikeSafe Hiker Responsibility Code! This seems a little TOO much like the pigs in Animal Farm changing the rules under the cover of darkness...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

For clarity: When I said "backup capacity" I was referring to peaking plants. The need for more efficient peaking plants should spur developments in this area. I know of two companies that are developing solutions to this problem (and there are probably many more). When you add more...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

DougPaul: I hadn't even thought about electrical interference... That's a very good point. Bird/bat kills are also an issue. You're right: No wind no $$. Wind companies in general do lengthly studies before develping a site to make sure they will be profitable, just like any business...

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

Very spooky... Those pictures are great examples of what I think developers/planner should avoid. Imagine that poping up next to your house?!

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

I apologize in advance for such a long post… Here are some of my thoughts: There appear to be two main objections people have when they hear a wind farm may be placed CLOSE to their home: The visual impact and the noise the turbines/blades generate. Visual: Apart from a huge tower dominating...

    Sunday 2/15...anyone hiking?

I was thinking of heading up Wildcat D via the polecat ski trail and then heading over to Wildcat A, coming back the same way. I'd apprieciate the company! I hike at a moderate pace and planned to hit the trail around 9:00-9:30.
