Would You Buy a SAR Card?

Compare SAR to hunting fees Interesting thought, Craig. Compare SAR fee to hunting licenses back in the day. In the "early years," more than now, hunting licenses paid for the conservation departments that then paid for fish hatcheries, etc. Fees, fines, and enforcement were also put in...

Anyone seen a swimming squirrel? - MOVED FROM Q&A

I've seen squirrels swimming a couple of times. Once I saw it enter the water - it looked like it just had a bad jump. It caught a thin branch, but couldn't hold on and it fell into the stream. The other time, I think it was just trying to cross at a wide spot - neither time did the squirrels...

    Speaking of Solar Power . . .

I think I can see why there's not a lot of solar backpacking gear. $119 for the cell phone charger (which I assume would also be similar to a battery charger). You can recharge at home for a few cents. Maybe on a looong trip when I was going to be somewhat stationary & would have a way of...

    Fav Reads- limit to nature/Adventure

The Earth is Enough by Harry Middleton - not quite hiking, but it gets to the point of what people can get out of nature. I also like reading guidebooks, even if I never will hike in the areas. Anything by Berd Heinrich. John McPhee's "Controling Nature." And of course, "A Walk in the...

    GPS discussion

For kayaking, I like the Garmin Foreunner and now the Foretrex. Having the screen on my arm, instead of on the deck, is pretty handy. I can take a quick look at the direction arrow as I paddle. That doesn't work so well when hiking. To reiterate what someone else said, though, you still...

What kind of hiker are you?

Depends on the Grade Let's see... If the trail is flat and my pack is light, I tend to move along. But on the way up, the steeper the trail gets, the more interesting the views become. Especially when it's hot. Then I really enjoy the views. Coming down's another matter.

    The Evolution of GEAR

Belts and Cordura I could live with wool & 60-40, but I do remember the revelation that a padded hip belt was. Before that, I had a canvas "Yucca" pack with no belt - although it was pretty rugged. At the time I was a boy scout, so I had the energy to cart it around... Second choice would be...

    I Found Someone's Trace (Sunglasses)

Hiking the Brother's over the weekend, and found a pair of sunglasses. Not sure if this is the place to post this sort of thing, but email with a description & I'll get them to you. Also picked up a few candy / power bar wrappers & a small broken tripod, but I don't expect anyone will want them...

    NE Caves and other curiosities.....

Does anyone know if the deep crack cave on Pitchoff is still accessable? You had to climb to get to the entrance, but it was pretty deep.

    Shovels as Winter Gear

SnowShoevel I wear old-style Michigan snowshoes. In a pinch, they actually work pretty well as a snow shovel. I've even dug out a stuck car with one. But for only 5 oz, I may change...

E-Bay Alert : Backpacking Tent (Humorous)

Who's laughing now? What's funnier, the ad, or the fact that the winning bid was 360 pounds (isn't that about $500? I guess they can't say they weren't warned!

    backpack that generates electricity

A Better Alternative Did you see the link below the one on the pack? The generator weighs 6 lbs, but I usually can find a supply of pee on the trail! Plus, no one will try to borrow my extra battery. Power of Pee

Your favorite gear that is no longer made?

Winans Camel Cannondale made a backpack that was a compromise between an external and internal frame pack. It's frame was kind of an hourglass, so there was a lower part to hang a bag from & a flat upper shelf, but most of the frame was along your spine (but didn't touch it). Comfortable...

Just in time for the full moon

Do Coyotes Smell Worse Than Wolves? Am I missing something? Doesn't noisome mean something smells bad? Or do they want wolves to run 'noisy' coyotes out?

    Adk's green patches?

Beaver Meadows? Perhaps not ponds filling in, but possibly former beaver dams that haven't grown back. They're like a large field for a while.

    Items stolen out of camp?

I've never worried in back country, but closer than a mile or so to a road, everything gets left and locked in the car - if I camp there at all.

    Cell phones and hiking

The Forerunner's designed to be on the wrist, with it's antenna up (if you put it on your left wrist) and has no battery compartment. It's got an internal battery & is recharged in a clip that connects to the charger & also provides the IO for the software. Drawback there is you can't recharge...
