    Cutler Coast tentsites

Stayed there two to three years ago and did not find any tent platforms on the sites. There are open air privies, which thankfully I did not have the pleasure of using. I stayed on the middle site of the three sites, but all have awesome views. Have a great overnight.

Does anyone know if there is a fresh water supply near the campsites on the Bold Coast (Cutler, ME) in early spring (April)? I was hoping to to stay longer than a night and did not want to pack in gallons of water. Thanks!

    Untreated Ethan Pond Water?

Thought I'd post an update to my initial posting. It has been three weeks and I have suffered no ill effect from drinking untreated water at Ethan Pond. I will certianly test my filter pre and post trip from now on. Thanks for all those who responded to my initial posting, and those who...

    Untreated Ethan Pond Water?

I spent two nights at Ethan Pond Campsite (Sept. 12th & 13th, 2009) and drank 6L of water over two days from Ethan Pond. I tested my First Needs Deluxe Filter when I returned home and found the dye test (which I normally test prior to trips) failed. I strongly suspect I ingested 6L of...

    10 Point Step-In Crampon

10 Point Crampon I just purchased a pair of Grivel 10 Point Cramp-o-Matics on sale to fit onto my size 12.5" mountaineering boot. I now have a quick question about the extender bar and flexibility of the crampon. As seen in a previous post by Darwin in Feb 06 there is a little tab on the...

Flooding this week in the Whites, be careful

I am heading up to Greenleaf on Friday afternoon via Old Bridle Path. On Saturday I was planning on coming down Falling Waters, which I now am reconsidering given the heavy rains of the past few days. How is Liberty Springs after heavy rain? Better than Falling Waters?

A few more details on the Phillips Brook Windfarm

Yurt system is still there! The yurts were moved to new locations a few years ago, in most cases only a few hundred yards from the original locations. We stayed in the South Summit yurt in late January. We could see a test tower on the ridge to the north of our location. The operator of the...

Full Zip Fleece Mid Layer Pants?

I just wanted to give a plug to Cold Lizard in Stowe, VT. I just spoke with the customer service (and owner Katherine) about fit issues with the full zip fleece pants. The company will custom manufacture the pants to my specifications/measurements and ship the product to me with no shipping...

Full Zip Fleece Mid Layer Pants?

Thanks for all your help. Just to summarize the information I found. Ragged Mountain does carry 200 weight PolarTec fleece full side zip pants normally, but was out of stock for six weeks. REI does carry 100 weight full zip pant, but not the 200 weight. I found a 200 weight full zip sold by...

    Crossing A Brook/River?

How does one cross a stream/brook/river in mountains safely after rain the night before? When do you turn back and not cross the stream/brook/river? I was hiking with my wife and came across a somewhat swollen Whitewall Brook. We ended up turning back, since Ethan Pond trail was close. It...

    Flume Slide Trail Parking?

The map I am looking at is not too clear (State of NH-Franconia Notch State Park hiking trails map). Is Whitehouse trailhead after or before Rt.3 crosses under I-93? Is the trailhead marked with a sign visible from the road?

    Help!!! (I need ideas!)

I have stayed in the Errol, NH area in yurts, which combined serious partying with trails just outside your door. I doubt you'll get any entertainers to show up, still a good time. See website link below: http://www.phillipsbrook.org/

    Winter Shell Combo (Hybrid/Paclite)?

With all the recent threads a re-evaluation of my winter gear is in-order. Specifically, I am writing to ask your opinion on my winter shell combo. I am a three season backpacker, with limited four season experience. All of the backpacking done to this point is (and will be) below tree line...

Solo hiking above treeline in winter

Does anyone carry a personal locator beacon? Seems to me they would be very usefull for solo winter backpacking / hiking. The units can be rented for a modest price online. The lithium ion batteries are said to operate down to temperatures of -40 F. Hopefully it wouldn't provide someone with...
