    Catskills Belleyare Development Approved

This may be a bit political but why should people not be able to build on their own land? The watershed issue is so New York City does not have to build a water filtration system. If the city (via the state) ,does not want people to build or use their private land as they see fit, the city or...

    Presi Traverse w/a hut stay...

Testosterone A few years back when I would go hiking with OPKs, as we were packing I would tell them that “I will carry the heavy stuff since I do not think you can handle the weight”. They would fight over who would get to carry the heaviest load. Sometimes it is good for teenage boys to...

    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

Pete, First of all I should state that I do all of my hiking in New York. You make a number of good points and I know you have stated that you favor letting the blazes fade, but if this is how the FS is removing blazes (http://www.vftt.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1203) I would...

    Climate Change in the Northeast

As a chemist I can say Dave has it right. Let us take a simplified look at this: Gasoline is mostly carbon and hydrogen with some oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur but these are small. Let us look at the simplest hydrocarbon, methane (CH4). CH4 + 2O2 > CO2 + 2H2O 16 + 64 > 44 + 36 So we...

    Msr's? - moved from Q&A

Hi Guys, I like my crescent moons but I have heard so much about the MSRs on this sit that I am thinking about a 2nd pair of shoes. I have a question. I have been told that the MSRs make a lot of noise in hard snow and ice. I do a lot of solo shoeing and so I like it as noise free as...

    'Tagging' up Redington

Paradox is right; the hot pink paint was most likely “marking” paint which is designed to breakdown relatively quickly in the sun. If this was not so think of how many paint marks there would be on streets and sidewalks from all the work that is done. On the bad side a lot of the paint is most...

What's the best thing you've learned here?

I have learned a lot but I would have to say the best thing was “that there are a lot of people as crazy as I am about hiking”. Even though I have only met a few of you, the people on the site are great. It is nice to learn that there is someone like Darren willing to put his heart and soul...

What gear do you plan to add this year?

I just picked up a new tent yesterday. I did not need it since I do not do as much camping as I did in the past and I have one that I have never used!! I think I like tents. A new filter would be nice.

    Coffee before a hike

I am with Pete and Dave. While I love the smell of coffee I HATE the taste! I was a big coke drinker and got my caffine that way for years. About 6 months ago I put up with the headache for 5 days and have not had a drink since.

    Whiteface and Esther 12/28

Hi Tom, That was me that you saw at the top. I could not tell that was you with most of your face covered. The others in the group stayed on the road when I took the trail. It took them about 10 more minutes to get to the top. As you could see I am soooo out of shape. I plan on more trips...
