Black fly reports for your area?

Just spent the weekend in the northern Lake George region - about 20 minutes south of Ticonderoga. We were outside all night Thursday and then all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning before departing - hardly anything. Here and there they would come out (Black Flies) but nothing that would...

    Bugs?

Well, I guess packing the head net is a must to keep on the safe side. Always pack the DEET anyway.

    Bugs?

I'm heading up to the norhtern Lake George region the first weekend in June and wondering how the bugs have been.., It's been a wet spring for the region and I'm guessing Black Flies and Mosquitoes are going to be in abundance but was wondering how folks experience with them of late has been.

    Buck Mountain 8/11

I have never hiked Buck Mountain before. I've hiked its neighbor, Black Mountain many times but never this one. So it was that I had the opportunity this past Wednesday. The weather turned cooler from the humid weather of earlier in the week. When I arrived at the trailhead parking it was...

    Black Mountain

I had the opportunity to revisit this ol friend. It had been about 4 years since I last hiked it. This is about my 7th or 8th time on it. As the highest mountain that overlooks the Lake George area, it offers wonderful views and solitude. Hiking on a Sunday did not offer the solitude but the...

Mosquitoes in the Lake George region

IN two weeks I'll be spending a week in the northern Lake George region and was wondering how the mosquitoe activity has been? I know I'll get out and do some hiking but I also wanted to bring the kids on some shorter ones but when the bugs are bad that is more effort than it's worth.

    Pharaoh Lakes Wilderness Area (Adirondacks)

I love that region but it is haven for BF's and Mosquitoes from Mothers Day through the 4th of July. I generally only hike it very early in the spring and late summer/fall - Otherwise it's a boat load of DEET and having to constantly move - I like to be able to "smell the roses" when I hike...

    Black Fly Update

I was in the northern Lake George region once again, 5-22 thru 5-24 and I can say that the Black Flies are waning (some on Friday afternoon -that was it) and the Mosquitoes were beginning to make a showing.

    Black Fly Update

I was in the northern Lake George region this past weekend and the Black Flies were active but not biting. Very few in the Boloton landing area, but more so as I went north. The worst was in the Pharoah Wilderness area where, though they were not biting, were swarming in big numbers. This...

    Digital SLR suggestions wanted

As someone who teaches photography classes, I'll tell you what I tell students. The best SLR, is the one that feels great in your hands. It should be the one where the controls and menu's work for you - that you understand and communicate with. Don't let name brand pressure you into a model...

    Hot Weather and Black Flies

I know it's a few weeks until Black Fly season gets into full swing but I was wondering if the recent warm/hot weather streak awoke a few early risers? I'll be stomping around the northern Lake George region and was wondering if DEET or a head net needed to be packed. I generally don't bother...

    Black Fly Update

Just got back from a week in the norhtern Lake George area and did not come across any black flies - and the mosquitoes were at a minimum as well.

Driving to the NJ Shore question

Leave early is the best advice - if you are on the road around 5am-ish you should not run into problems and then you have the whole day ahead and can watch the ttraffic come to a crawl. I grew up on the jersey shore (Pt. Pleasant) and used to drive a cab there when i was in college.

    Black Fly Update

I was in the northern Lake George region this past weekend 5-29 thru 6/1 and the Black Flies were out in full force. Some biting not as many as I thought for the amount of them. I was with 5 other people and fortunate for me, they didn't seek my blood as often as they sought theirs. But they...

    Bug Report Please

I won't be too far from there and thanks for the heads up - i know the Pharoah Wildrness is awful with mosquitoes to, so the Black Fly notice isn't a surprise- a few years ago was a bad season as well. Hopefully where I'll be it will be less so but who knows - looking to have fun anyway and...

    Bug Report Please

I'll be heading up to the northern Lake George region this upcoming weekend and was wondering what the bug situation has been like? I understand that it varies from location to location but I'm looking for a general feel. How are the Black Flies and have the Mosquitoes made their big entrance yet?

To All Paddlers: How do you protect your camera?

Dig out an old film camera or pick up a used one somewhere with a lens, get some film and then your set.., fears put on the back burner. Or get the bag from the previous post which I just bookmarked.
