    Climbing nights?

Anyone interesting in a regular climbing night? I have got to get on rock this summer - last year was a total bust. I'm pretty much a newb, looking for mostly top-roping. I'm just learning how to second a leader on trad (never done sport, but interested in learning). I'm only doing 5.4-5.6...

Stony Brook Trail up Moriah - easy or hard to follow?

Elizabeth - howdy, we met you on the Carter-Moriah trail! I recognize those pups in your avatar. There were two of us, one with a pink bandanna and one with a green bandanna, and we met you below the best of the ledges. Hope you had a great hike!

Missing Hiker - Mt Washington Area

Just got a look at the map with the NEK-9/UVWRT search areas and the location of the found body. He was well outside their search area - I have no idea about any other teams' areas. As an FYI, the teams searched the area the email talked about (east of Hermit Lake, west of PNVC) thoroughly - I...

    Survival Game

I was shocked at the very low percent that got all ten! I mean, I certainly didn't expect the majority to get all ten, but only 5.4%??? Then again, every hike with DR's daughters starts out with naming the ten essentials and remembering what those things painted on trees are called...

    Child carrier security question

Be really careful about adjusting the pack to the adult, too. DiamondRidge has a carrier that seems to be perfectly suited for someone 5'7" - I'm 5'10 and she's 5'4. It didn't really fit either of us well, and limited us in what we could do. We made it work, though - the mountains bring out the...

    Ways to Hike the 48

Huh? Do you mean not stepping on any part of a trail that you used for another peak? In that case, I see what you mean. But you can definitely get one Hancock without touching the other. Interesting that those are the ONLY peaks for which there is only one trail leading in... DiamondRidge...

    Osseo trail question

Where are the stairs in relation to the Flume summit? I'm thinking of bushwhacking off Osseo at about two miles from Flume, where it looks like it starts switchbacking and takes a major turn before heading more due south to Lincoln Woods. Would I miss most of the stairs that way?

Missing Hiker - Mt Washington Area

Thanks Breeze. Very much appreciated. Though we aren't listed in the F&G reports, Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team fielded as usual with NEK-9. I didn't get to go on this one, but my thoughts are very much with everyone up there. A nice video showing Mark and Abel with his UVWRT field...

What's your opinion of "Hiker Dies/Gets Lost" threads ?

Morbid curiosity? Check. See Accidents in North American Mountaineering, Vol. whatever they are up to now. Learning? Check. The one big huge mondo takeaway point that I get from every thread is that SH*! HAPPENS! No matter how well prepared you think you are, no matter how superior you are sure...

    Mt. Hood ideas

Lots to do up there. I, personally, recommend checking out the Tilly Jane Trail on the other side of the mountain. But that could have something to do with the fact that I nominated that trail to the National Register. :D Lots of other trails around there, including one to Mirror Lake (or Pond?)...

    Lanterns

A friend of mine had a battery-powered and hand-cranked lantern that he was trying out last weekend. Though this was its first test run, it seemed to be nice to have both wall-charged batteries good to go for those first nights and the hand-crank for the rest of the time. For those of us not...

Article on the guy who cut his hand off

I've read his book, and while I found it interesting, I'm actually kind of sad to read this article. It reminds me very much of the war vets who cannot move on. He lives his whole life defined by those three days. People saying this was good for him because it gave him something to do, someone...

    Handheld GPS & Young Kids

Contact Magellan and see what they recommend as the next version of that one. I'd also contact Garmin to see if they want to tout their competitor model. ;)

    Missing hiker found

You know, I seriously found this the creepiest part. I read the F&G report like four times looking at the timing of it. I wonder if wifey-poo added a little extra weight, nicked the M&C, and set him off while she got her black dress dry-cleaned and insurance papers in order!

Did someone say WNY? Ick - who would ever associate with someone who lived there?! ;)

I hiked the Pemi Loop, turned around, and tried to do it again

You rock, leaf! As much as I was hurting on Friday during my move on no sleep, I knew how much more you were hurting hiking on no sleep. I was so glad to get your texts and the updates and know you were accomplishing so much out there, getting done what most people (myself heartily included)...

June 29 - missing hiker in Franconia

I was with Ziggy and Robyn when we made the find. I am so grateful to be able to bring him home to his family. Ziggy was definitely on his game - he wasn't exactly sure what he was smelling, but he took us right to the spot once he figured it out. Rest in peace, Daniel.
