    Trail Adopters Needed

I am putting out my annual appeal for new White Mountain trail adopters. The Pemi Ranger District has been successful in more than doubling the number of adopters over the last several years. However, we still have almost 90 miles of Orphaned trails. Trail adopting need not be a huge...

Mt Tecumseh via Mt. Tecumseh trail

Date of Hike: 12/15 Trail Conditions. Bare ground at the bottom. Several inches of hard crust up high. Much water ice on the trail. Second brook crossing quite dicey. I avoided it by following a herd path over to the ski area and then rejoining the trail where it nears the ski area after...

Pierce/Jackson via CP, WC and WJ

Numerous blowdowns on Crawford Path and a few on Webster Jackson. Most are now gone. Trail reroutes brushed in where necessary. All trails broken out, but snowshoes useful between the peaks. Both summits quite icy making some kind of traction aid helpful. Giff, Sarah and Mike

Hancocks via the normal loop 4/17/2009

Wore microspikes from the car although there were a few bare spots in the first 1/2 mile. Brook crossings no issue but boots should be waterproof if you want to keep your feet dry. We ascended south. Coming down south would have required crampons or at least some very deliberate tree to tree...

Jefferson via Jewell and Gulfside -- 4/14/09

A few bare spots down low other than that good firm snow with little evidence of prior post holing. Wore micro-spikes until we hit the snow fields where I opted for crampons. Sarah stayed with her Hillsound crampons, a slightly beefier version of micro-spikes. Great day with little wind and...

Trails all hard backed snow with a few spots of ice on the steeps. No open water. Wore micro-spikes from the car. About one inch of fresh snow on the ridge. Trees on the ridge still covered with ice from some past event.

Carter Dome: UP 19 mile brook to Hut - down Carter Dome Trail

Bare ground showing up on 19 mile brook before junction with Carter Dome trail and on lower part of 19 mile brook. Other than that it was all hard packed snow. Monorail help up well. Wore microspikes all day (Note: Sarah switched to crampons coming off of Mt. Hight. I was actually demoing a...

    Trail maintenance

Last fall I started a thread asking if people were interested in volunteering to do trail work. The thread generated a lot of noise and some real interest. I closed out the thread by saying that I would get back to people in the spring. I know there is much snow on the trails at this point...
