    Bears: A brand new experience!

It just happened AGAIN! 6 years ago I reported seeing a bear on the North Trail to Giant. I've been up to Owl's Head Lookout many times since then and never forgotten the experience. I am pleased to report that I saw a bear up there this morning! It was not far from the spur trail to the...

Real Men Don’t Wear Skirts! Or Do They??????

A few years ago I recall an article in the Plattsburgh Press Republican about Peter Fish climbing Marcy for his 400th or 500th time. There was a photo of him standing on the summit in a kilt. Well, if Mr. Fish can do it, it must be OK.

    Bears: A brand new experience!

Didn't get a photo of it. The bear was facing away from me when we came upon it. I told my dog to stay, the bear looked over her shoulder, saw us and jogged up the trail out of site. Whole thing took 10 seconds.

    Bears: A brand new experience!

I moved to Elizabethtown 12 years ago to get closer to good hiking. For at least my first 9 years I hiked alot. At least twice weekly year round. I've seen a lot of things on the trail, and I hiked a lot of trails. But somehow I've never seen a live bear on the trail. I've seen them from the...

    Boots...I need a new pair!

chaco! Anyone tried Chaco's boots? I hear they're going out of the boot business and have sold their entire remaining stock to Sierra Trading Post. Online reviews have been excellent, so I've ordered a pair.

    Ausable Club

restrictions on lake I doubt it's skiable just now. Check lakeplacid.com skiing conditions for up to date information. One additional note--the caretaker at the cabin by the gate recently told me that it's not legal to ski on the lake surface. It is not an established trail.

    winter hiking boots

There are light alternatives! Depends upon what you're doing of course. Years ago I bought some Salomon Powderspikes at the Mountaineer in Keene Valley. They felt Converse high tops, but warm. Very lightweight and very insulated. I used them with G10's and with MSR snowshoes. Back then...

What age a puppy can hike?

my own two cents My two year old pound pup just had his second knee surgery. First was an ACL, second was removal of a torn meniscus (sp?). He's confined to short walks on a leash for 12 weeks. I started hiking him at 3 months. No way to know, really, when the injuries occured, but I wish...

    Is Hiking Pop Culture?

Pop Culture Well, I'm sitting here drinking a beer and wondering if I can get time away from my one year old this weekend to get above treeline, and I spy this thread. By way of introduction, I moved to the Adirondacks 11 years ago to spend more time on the trails, and before that i picked up...

    Drinking water in the winter??

A couple of questions. wouldn't gatoraide have a lower freezing point than plain water? I've had it turn to slush on long cold dayhikes, but it's never frozen. Another consideration: motion. The water in the nalgene bottle in the pack of a hiker in nearly constant motion will slosh around a...

    The hikers friend

Just good folks I have hiked the Adirondacks alone for years. Well, I was almost always with my dog, but that's for another thread. Anyway, over the years I have chanced upon hundreds if not thousands of other hikers on the trail. Sometimes I have hiked part or all day with folks I met along...

    Best dog breeds for hiking?

Get a Dog and Save a Life I have had wonderful success with Lab/Shep mixes. That being said, please consider getting a dog from a shelter. Check out Petfinder.com for available animals in your area.

    SCARIEST mountain stories/legends/lore...

phantom hitchiker This is a regional variant of a widely spread "urban" legend. Here's a version told in the song "Bringing Mary Home". I think it's covered in one of Jan Brunvand's urban legend books under "vanishing hitchhiker".   I was driving down a lonely road one dark and stormy night...

    Dog Etiquette on the trails

A Lot to Think About There really is a great deal to think about. I started that most recent Leash Law thread. They come up every once in a while. It really is an eye opener to see how many vocal leash supporters there are. For me there's something wonderful about having my dog along and...

    Leash Law in the Adirondacks.

And now...a word from our sponsor.... Hi. It's me. I'm the person who got this ball rolling. I know this thread comes up from time to time, but it'd been a while and it was on my mind. I moved up to the ADK region almost 10 years ago with my dog. It was just the two of us and we covered a...

    Leash Law in the Adirondacks.

Whoops! I was about to post and something went horribly wrong. I wonder if maybe my previous attempt will end up here anyway.... Well, I'm wondering about the leash laws in the Adirondacks. I understand why they exist. But every once in a while I like to let the pup run. I know that the...
