Unlike the Friends of BSP auction which has protections against automated proxy bidding at the last second of the auction, the Ebay auctions do not, so a lot of the activity will not be visible until after the end of the auction.

I have found that it makes no sense to bid early. Decide the maximum price you are willing to pay and then check back an hour or so before the bidding ends.

Automated Proxy Bidding has taken the "fun out of it" On the other hand I have done very well in the past for obscure items on Ebay without a lot of activity. Just set up an automated proxy bid on an auction sniping program and wait for the bots to fight it out.
