There are about 5 tick-borne diseases in MA, there are probably similar number for most (all?) of NE. Of these diseases, only Lyme has a 24hr delay in transmission--all of the others can be transmitted immediately. Thus it may be too late be the time one gets home to perform a tick check...

I second the use of permethrin on one's clothing. (I have been using it for a number of years and haven't found a tick on me.)

I just do the permathin on my pants and shoes, and tuck my pants into my socks. Cheap and effective. I still get the oddball tick that crawls up my shirt. I always tick check after the hike, but sometimes miss one. Another good reason to take a shower when you get home.

We have this problem mostly when we clear out overgrown trails or walk in tall grass.

I treat my socks, low gaiters, pants, and shirt with permethrin and use DEET on my skin if needed and have never found a tick on me. I also do some trail work and occasional bushwacking so I am certainly exposed.

There is a 33-page pdf from the Bedford, MA department of health on ticks and 7 diseases: http://www.bedfordma.gov/sites/bedfordma/files/file/file/lets_talk_about_ticks.pdf

There was a 2-hr presentation on mosquito and tick borne diseases and how to protect against them by Dr. Catherine Brown (MA Dept of Public Health Vet) and Larry Dapsis (BS, Deer Tick Project Coord and Entomologist with the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension) earlier this year in Bedford, MA. http://www.thebedfordcitizen.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Tick-Talk-2016.pdf. The entire video can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A47Gp2E_fNo&feature=youtu.be. Unfortunately the slides are not available online, but the slides from a similar tick presentation by Larry Dapsis can be found at http://orleansconservationtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/Larry-Dapsis-Tick-Presentation.pdf
