Jan. 17th: Very cold day, sub-zero for most of the hike. Redeeming quality, sunshine, bright without cloubs. The trail from Garden to Shorey Short well packed and in good condition. Streams along the way frozen. The walk over Shorey steep but the views excellent. The trail up Basin very good and the ladder is exposed. Snowshoes or crampons for the climb from the ladder to high point. Snowshoes to the summit and beyond. The trail beyond Basin packed, a little rough in places but nothing special. The trail up to cliff of Saddleback snowshoes fine. The rocks of cliff, bare with little ice. Once on top, snowshoes all the way back to Garden.
Very good day for views. From Basin we could clearly see the snow capped Green mountains.
